New breeders...

No pics just yet, but I picked up a 1.1 pair of ASFs today from Rich at Naptown Reptiles for my BP...super excited, and they are 10x cuter than reg. mice or fancy mice...so if you get attached easily I don't suggest them! My g/f may have a hard time...she will just make me promise to never feed off the original two :)

Another breeding pair = new breeding setup...will have that setup and going Friday...with pics of the setup and the ASFs...I will probably just add the photos on this thread, so keep an eye out ;)

I'd really like to see pictures of your set up.... Did you ever post pictures of your mouse set up? If not, could you?

Thanks!

I will, but I just have them in a 5 gal tank right now...nothing too amazing...but I am holding back a female from the mouses first litter so I will have 1.2 mice...and I will do the same with the ASFs so that I have 1.2 ASFs...their setup is basically a copy of one I saw on another site...very cheap very clean looking...so I will post the pics ASAP on FRIDAY....
Here are my two ASFs for now...

You mean I have to wait until Friday!!! *cries*

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. Getting a couple live feeder mice from the local store and then using them to produce babies. I'm just not entirely sure on the set up. How big a container etc.

I keep my pet rats in a 58 quart sterilite tub with holes punched into it. They're baby rats, btw, but they won't ever be used to produce feeders (both female). It seems to work fine for them apart from it getting stinky fast. But that might just be rodent smell. :shrugs:

BTW those ASF are SO cute... I see what you mean by getting attached to them. :D

SF's are very cute and they smell less then fancy mice :) We have some too lol. You don't want to get bit by one of those though. Better to be bit by a possum.. Lots of teeth..

Do you know why they are called Multimammates??? When the female is ready to deliver check out all them nippies

Haha Christine, I was wondering about that...cause I would weigh my female mouse everyday before delivery and NEVER saw nipples...?
I got them from Rich at Naptown Reptiles, he did warn me that they are much more defensive of their babies than regular mice... :)

And Em, I'm crying too! Lol...I want to get it setup now, but the funds are lacking...if they weren't I would have bought something at the show today! Lol...
I will visitor message you when I put up the pics... :)

Wear gloves!! Just to be safe. :D

Oooh, okay I thought you already had it set up and were torturing me before taking and posting pics! VM would be great though. ;)

You will like the soft furred rats! I have a few colonies of them and they do not have the smell as the regular mice. The newborns are big though, maybe a little too big for feeders for young corns. Good luck with them, they are very cute.

Oh please do the same to me!

I have been considering starting a breeding colony for my snakes..
I only have three corns right now but I have four more on the way from SMR..

So I'm guessing that it will be more wallet-friendly for me to produce my own feeders than shelling out $11 for a six pack of pinkies from petsmart..

Do you know any good sites where I can get some good info on setting up my first colony? I've been reading a bit on the feeders forum but I'm still lacking quite a bit of knowledge.. :awcrap:

Depending on how many breeders you are going to go with, you could do this:

5 gal tank w/lid
water bottle
food dish

Aspen bedding ( which is nice especially if you already buy it for you snakes )
Mouse food-"Lab Blocks" I believe is what they call them, I am switching to them Friday...

I only had a 1.1 pair of mice in this setup...but was told I would be fine with a 1.2 or 1.3 setup...just get a little critter carrier to put the male in after the pinkies are born...
~OR~
Wait till I vm you on Friday, and roll with the setup I am going to do :)
I will take pics during the setup as well as a finished product...

I have one crew 2 f 1 m in a 20gallon long. They really like it. They like their igloo house and log. They LOVE wheels...I also found that they prefer my gerbil mix "seeds, oatmeal ect" over just plain pellets and rat blocks. Probably offer a combo each day. All around in the end it's better for the snakes anyway ;)

Yeah, they can be territorial. The male for the females and the moms with babies. I just move them over by their tails. Most really don't move when they see us aliens but I have had some circle me lol.. There are also some that will take to humans. Not becoming as friendly as a fancy rat or mouse, but I've had some just sit on my knee for hours at a time. They are very quiet animals.

You should only house one male with several females. Like mice the males will fight. You will also find you have a head female and she will often fight over hiding places so it's good to have several houses and logs for them rather then put in feeding racks. If they don't like their nest situation they will cannibal each others nest just like mice. Then the snakes will have no food :(

Hubby points up has the snakies. I've been showing rodents for over 10yrs lol.. I've been wanting to get on here and learn a little more about the snakes but find myself answering all the rodent posts

They are cute though and yes, they will win your heart over the stinky meecies. :D We kept our first pair too and vowed not to feed them off. Sometimes it's hard to play god but what did Mufassa "lion king" say? We are all part of the great circle of life.

Enjoy them. The two you have the one with white is called a badger marking then you have the self. They both look to be Agouti color.
I have all three colors in SFR's and markings.Albino's are freaky looking lol.

I definitely knew about only one male in w/females...but didn't know about the females getting pissy towards eachother sometimes...I guess I will try out the 1.2 setups and if it doesn't work, pull a female out of each, and get two more males...lol :) Or just feed them off....so I am back down to two 1.1 pairs... :)

Thanks!

they also have ALOT of babies. These are the black plague rats that bred with the wild rats when they came over on the boat. The common city rat of today. But I've had to split my male and female cause of how many pups they did have and even after they where split for five months the mother was still pumping out litters. I think they hold sperm? but have never really tested hard to know lol
