New corn setup

About ten years ago, I spent ages reading up about corns and all the available color morphs, their care and housing, etc. I found them fascinating and beautiful. I never did get around to it (my ex had some kind of issue with snakes, he "didn't mind them but didn't want to own one").

I'd been thinking about it off and on since then, but never had the opportunity. Well, I finally got the opportunity, and now have a baby corn snake. I actually work at a pet store, so I know the care our animals get, and I trust my place of work and know that everyone genuinely puts the best they can into their care.

He (or she) has already eaten at least one frozen/thawed pinky, though he didn't like being observed while doing so. Some quiet time and a towel over the keeper took care of it and he ate with no problem. So yay, I definitely don't need live!

I haven't measured him yet, but he is quite small, around a foot or so. He's in a 15g long. I have a shallow water dish, from which he's already drunk water, a large rock hide half over the under tank heater with a digital thermometer probe inside, currently reading 86.4F. I have some toilet paper tubes inside too at different spots so he can move around and hide if he wants a different temperature to keep comfortable.

I have a handful of aspen shavings inside the hide, and paper towel lining the bottom of the terrarium for now.

Is there a consensus over carefresh versus aspen shavings? From what I have read, aspen seems to be preferred but some use carefresh without any problem as well. For such a young snake, will it make a difference?

He's a pic of him if you're curious.

Looks good! I am glad you read your "corn bibles" before getting the snake, most people don't and make big mistakes.

Good luck!

I was up until 5am last night googling and reading threads here. A friend had given me her unused UTH and it fit my 15g just perfectly, so that was a great bonus. The digi thermometer read a little on the cool side (around 70ish) until I put the hide over it to conserve heat, cool side is about 70 now so he's got a good gradient. I will have a 40g long for him when he's grown up, with built in locking screen lid. I got cage clips but he can't reach the lid right now, he's way too short. I saw him try and once about 2/3 of his body was up, he flopped over, but until I bend the clip so it'll fit (no pliers, rawr), I've got a small potted plant sitting on top! I scattered some unused aquarium plants around so he's got a little forest around the big hide. I might look into naturalistic terrariums later, and what live plants are safe.

He's shy, of course, but he was tooling around the edges earlier.

I just can't believe he pretty he is. The closest photo I have found online was of a "snopal" morph, and the adult photo of the same snake was just about pure white, but of course I don't have records of his parents. All I know is he is definitely amelanistic and looks anerythristic (that is such a mouthful!). The flesh between his white markings looks very much like unpigmented pink flesh rather than actual red coloration.

His eyes are amazing too. In bright light, the light actually refracts through his eyes and you see a little spark of red colored light against his cheek. I've never seen anything like it before. The little guy is fascinating and I just want to hold him up to a light and see if I can count his vertebra! Maybe once he's more settled in? :p

he looks like a snow corn they usually are a little pink when they are young if you wanna see the adult pic i have some in my threads

Looks good. I would put the thermometer probe under the paper towels though, you want it right on the glass over the UTH. Also you don't say if you have one, but you need a thermostat. An uncontrolled UTH can get HOT!

Sometimes people get lucky finds in pet stores, but more than likely you have yourself an adorable little snow :)
