hi folks Kaa is as long as my arm just under a meter i guess with being new to snakes its all a learning curve i have had a bearded dragon called Ralph for over a year and a half so not new to reptiles just guess the movement is very different to the dragon ....

Welcome to the forum! I also only got a baby, mines really fiesy thou, hope she will still learn in time to warm up to me! Best of luck!

Welcome, Threadbear! Kaa sounds gorgeous! I simply love butters... Can you post some pictures?

as far as i can tell maybe once a day exept for the 48hour rule after feeding for around 10-15 minutes to start and as you both get used to it anything up to 30 min is ok :)

thx cornstar was thinking much the same (did remember the 48 hour rule )..... not sure how to age a snake ?? i was told mine was about 2 years old from the guy i got mine from im sure some one on here mite be able 2 help snakeman13

mmm if i could take a guess id say ur presumably female at that length is probably about a year old, since i read somewhere that males mature at 18 to 24 months and females at 24 to 36 months reaching aprox 5-6ft for females so yeah my (noobie) guess would put her at around 12-18 months

well folks on my second attempt at a outing for Kaa found him in his den moved that out and he shot off up the back of the viv when then i swept up a middle coil he bit me 2 ..ho!!! joy then the tail started to vibrate ....time to back off i think lol lol something im doing wrong ? do i need a snake hook to get him out ??

It's really hard to handle a cornsnake with a snake hook. ALL cornsnakes rattle, given the right circumstances. It means you startled me, don't bother me, don't bother me I'm eating, etc. It doesn't mean I'm going to bite you, necessarily. If it did, I'd be getting bt multiple times a day.

If you know your snake is under a hide, it is less likely to bite you if you remove the hide quickly and pick the snake up gently in a clump before he either thinks about running or thinks about striking. it doesn't hurt so much when they bite anyway, especially babies. Once you have the snake picked up and out of the viv, it is not very common for the snake to bite, and definitely rare for the snake to bite the hand that is holding him. You just have to read his body language at that point and see if he is relaxed enough to let him roam around and climb on your hands, or if he is flighty or frightened and likely to take a flying leap, in which case it's better to cuddle him up in a little ball in your cupped hands, held up against your body, until he feels safer/calmer.

thanks for that nanci just at this point in time as a newbi and reading a lot about them lots of different takes on them by all who keep them some say they will let u know if they def don't want to be pick't up i took the biting and tail rattling as a im not in the mood lol lol hes 2 year old so carnt realy hold him in my cup't hands to big he is .......

what i have also noticed that helps abit is if i touch my baby first before picking her up, what you could also do if he does keep biting is to maybe invest in a pair of leather gloves, that was you certainly wont feel the bite and you could wear them until he is comfortable with being handled and you confident in removing him. Best of luck!

worth a try i have some leather gloves anyhow ....i do tend to touch him first of that has had the effect of him hi tailing it up the back wall super speed lol lol
