New Corns: Upper Keys & Miami

My order from Carol H. arrived this morning, and I snapped some pics before settling them down for a little acclimation. Carol was a pleasure to deal with, and I would recommend her to anyone looking for snakes.

Set 1 is Big Earn, the '03 Upper Keys. I've never seen one in person, so I was a bit shocked when I took him out of his bag. He's got a patternless white-to-yellow belly, and he's almost devoid of black/dark pigment except for his eyes. Carol gave me some great info about some speculation on the Upper Keys genetics. It's hard for me to believe that this guy isn't homo for some kind of pattern/color mutation. He's sort of hypo-ish and bloodred-ish at the same time. Hmmm, I have a couple of hypo-blood females... Even though I think this guy is nearing shed, I still think he's great looking.

Set 2 is Estefani, an '05 Miami female. She's a gorgeous little corn. She's got eight or more complete ovals on her neck-- a lot for a non-motley.

I also got a female '05 Mexican Black Kingsnake from Carol, but I'll be a rule-abiding poster and start a thread in "General" with her pics.

I'm beginning to wonder about the possibility of getting motley patterns w/o the motley gene. That Miami of yours reminds me of two of my amels that have ovals very far down the neck and saddles that "reach" towards each other like they want to touch and be a motley pattern. What do you think?

Thanks! Seems to me that maximum saddle connection shouldn't be a tough thing to selectively breed for. Selecting the best holdbacks would be a breeze because unlike some color lines, pattern is readily apparent at hatching. Of course, there are motleys with poor saddle connection, so this may not be as easy as I'm guessing. :shrugs:

He looks like he had no problems with the trip! One other thing you should know is that he has been in brumation since the end of October, so if you warm him up now just make sure his meals are small for the first few feedings. I really like them, I couldn't part with his sister. Although I am giving her a year off this year. Last year I "ass-u-me-d" that they would be too small to breed, and that it was too late in the season for the female to be ovulating. I put them together while cleaning cages and they hooked up in no time! I knew better. Mom/Sister layed with out a problem, but she's a little thin so I'll give her a break this year.
Your little Miami comes from a line of "circle necks", it shows up very heavily in this line. Have fun with them!

I really love the whole upper keys look. I stayed away this year due to the whole single gene at play bit, but I've got some projects in mind.

Outta Control? You don't even know. My last snake of the year (I swear) arrives next week. It's a Lavender-Blood female from Rich's Thanksgiving sale... to go with the Lav-Blood male I bought from him in an earlier insider sale. 'Tis not the season to be spending that kind of money!

My job pays ok, but I'm a childless bachelor, so I can put 100% of my money wherever I want to. I'm not into cars, so I drive my old, beat up, but paid for Subaru. I used to be quite the drinker, but I cut out about 99% of that, and that leaves me with a spare couple hundred a month. The snakes have been great alcohol treatment. I'm too busy with them to get too many drinks in! First thing I used to do when I got home from work was pour me about three fingers of SKYY into a Solo cup just to get things going. Now, the first thing I do is check my snake records, and see who has to be fed. :grin01:
