New Crested Gecko!

I caved. I purchased a reptile... with legs. How weird. On to the cuteness!

Well, since I'm a freak, I needed a pink one, even though he's a boy. The set up:

And on to the cuteness!

I know he's a Harlequin, and he has what looks like Floppy Tail Syndrome. But he sure is cute, and really neat to handle. I got some Repashy Crested Gecko diet for him, and some wee little crickets, and have been misting him. He's at about 73 degrees right now. Bedding is Eco Earth.

Sound right to everyone with cresties?

Now, what shall I name him?!?

Thanks for looking!

I think you should name him Lord Floppy Bottom. :D
He's absolutely adorable!
OOH! OOH!!! Or, you could name him Alice (as in Alice Cooper). That way he won't feel so bad with the pink. :D

If your going to feed crix you'll need another container or else he'll ingest the eco-earth just like with a snake impaction can be deadly. His cage is fine for quarantine but their arboreal and need sturdy sticks to climb vertically instead of on the ground and a larger cage with more height than a KK provides. A water bowl also is a must even though i am sure your misting twice a day. Floppy tail is believed in part to be from improper housing like no sticks and too small cages so for cheap housing I buy the extra large sweater boxes from the container store for under $9 and have no problems just punch holes in for ventilation of course. His floppy tail won't improve but housed properly it can be maintained and not worsen which is important. Also if you want to feed in that cage just use papertowels as the substrate instead it will make monitoring fecals easier and is a lot safer!!

I have the leaves wrapped around a dual-prong bendy stick, so there are two strudy levels off the floor.

I don't necessarily want to feed crickets... would he be ok with just the repashy?

Most of the care stuff on them is kind of iffy... says different things everywhere!

I have a 20 gallon tall tank that I can move him to eventually... and a big tree hide-thing I had in with the snakes he could have too.

Lemme snap a pic real quick... I have a little baby-bottle cap thing in there about the size of a silver doller, about half an inch high with water, and another cap (from a v8 fusion bottle) with the repashy in it.

The breeder recommended mixing it with peach baby food.

Then stuff I read said NOT to do that, so I haven't yet.

Would you like me to get better pictures of the enclosure from different angles and tell me if it's ok?

EDIT: Pictures of branch in enclosure

Can you see the little divet at the base of his tail in the pictures in the first post? Does that look like Floppy Tail to you?

I'd been researching these guys for a few months... but it's always different when you bring them home!

Thanks for all the help and well-wishes, everyone! *pummels brain for a name*

PLEASE go to the repashy forums. This "breeder" suggesting baby food sends BIG RED FLAGS. Baby food is sugar plain and simple and should never be mixed with CGD ever. It can actually cause floppy tail and metabolic bone disorder which is why his tail is twisting which in turn twists the pelvis. Just feed the Repashy diet straight and nix the baby food it will cause all kinds of problems long term and even death! He needs a 20 gallon tall minimum that is at least 16-18 inches in height and tons of sticks to climb on. You can collect sticks from your yard, soak them for 20 minutes in water, and bake them at 250 for an hour to sanitize them. I also add a coat of polyurthane (sp) to seal it so it never molds or breaks down and let it dry and air out for a week. Those bendy sticks are okish, but really don't offer great support. A good guide is to cover half the cage with fake leaves with some on the bottom as well and sticks running diagnonally all the way accross so they can jump from limb to limb since their arboreal and need this exercise. Your water and food bowl sound fine I use bottlecaps as well:) You also don't have to feed any insects at all if you prefer not to. My adults never get any unless they are breeding with only hatchlings and juvies getting 3-5 crix, once a week, and dusted with calcium plus made by repashy as well. All insects must be lightly dusted with a mixture of calcium and d3 so they can absorb it properly if your going to feed them at all though its not neccessary. Heres a pick of one of my juvi enclosures

Should I keep him in here until I'm sure he's feeding?

I can pull out the 20 gallon tall. Will I need to cover part of the top to up humidity like you would with a bp, or will the misting take care of it?

Should I go for one of the arboreal cham-type cages at some point?

something with lots of height?

I just have the one right now, and I only mixed the repashy with water when I put it in... With one, should I keep buying the small things of food, or will the bags last long enough for me to use them?

This is why I posted here.... Trying to weed through the bad info!

One gecko doesn't eat much, but you can go to pangea reptiles to buy at least 1/4-1/2 pounds which stay fresh in your fridge for almost a year just like mice. The cham cages are too open and suck on humidity usually but a 20 gallon tall with screen lid is fine without covering it just mist it and he'll be a happy camper. You can switch him now it takes them a few days to eat in a new cage but while he's new and adjusting its probably better than to get him all comfy and then switch him again. Their a lot different than snakes and don't stress as easily in my opinion. Remember though like snakes you can't have just one I promise!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Lori!

He ATE, btw! There was TOTALLY less in there this morning when I checked.

I mixed him up some new stuff and put it in. I would really prefer to just feed the Repashy, seems like a lot of extra headache to gutload 4 crickets!

Lemme see if I can find a picture of the hide-thingie I have.

I really like him! I know, they are ALSO potato chips....

But i really need to get ready/make room for my coral snows from poppycorns... must... have... pink... snakes.... before I get more of these cuties!
