New here and a question...

We have just gotten our first snake for my 7 yr old son the last part of July. I know he is my sons snake--but I am totally taken with him and handle him and care for him every day. I have been lurking here since before we got the snake and have learned a ton! Thank you!

Now for my question...when I clean our snakes water bowl, should I use soap of any kind? I have been cleaning it everyday in very hot water with no soap, and just rubbing my hand around it to wash it. (I use one of the reptile bowls that looks like a rock.) He has never pooped in his water so far, but I want to be sure I am cleaning it adequately. Thanks in advance! :wavey:

I use a antibacterial soap, to clean my bowls. I just make sure I rinse really well.

I wash out the dish each time change it/ every 2 days. That's what I do :)

Mild dish soap or antibacterial hand soap is fine as long as the residue is thoroughly rinsed.

Krenna,

Warn me before you post my response! :D

Welcome to the forum Jean. I should warn you that hanging around this crowd will lead to uncontrollable urges to own more corn snakes!!!!

Ain't that the truth CAV! I got my first corn in March of this year (reluctantly for my boys) Now I will have a total of about four new ones by the end of this month. My husband (who is not particularly fond of snakes) is starting to call me Snake Lady Freak Show. :)

Welcome to the forums!

In answer to your question, I clean out my snakes' bowls with antibacterial soap, but I also soak them in bleach water whenever I clean out my vivs. Just make sure to rinse them super well :)

I agree with Flygning. I clean out my water dishes every 2 days or so with a mild dish soap. then about every 3 to 4 weeks, I clean out the vivs and the water dish with mild bleach water and then wash again with mild soap to get any left over bleach out of the way. This will help to get anything the soap could leave be hind. The only water dish I don't clean out as often is the one in with my Adult Snow, as I have a fairly large tub of water and a pump with filter in it. I clean this one about once a week, unless someone poops in it.

I'd recommend caution in soaking the "real rock" bowls in bleach. Many of these are made from resins that are poured into molds. This results in a semi-porous container that can harbor chemical residue. If you use ceramic bowls this issue is much safer and easier to deal with than these "rocks".

Was that clear???? :shrugs:

very understandable. I use all ceramic bowls so I guess I am safe. I have one resin bowl, but it isn't in use right now.

is "real rock" one brand or just the type. I got a brandless bowl from PetCo and it sounds like what you are describing, so I guess I'll be careful.
Thanks a lot, CAV

By "real rock" I'm referring to the stuff that looks like it is rock, but isn't. :)
