Hi there all,
My name is Hoopy and this is my first post although i've been browsing since I bought my first Corn snake in August of 2005.
I looked high and low for a snake and this site has helped me a lot.I come from Scotland and looked all around for my first snake (NOT MANY LOCAL SELLERS!) but I eventually bought one from my local town(which I have found to be the best in the surrounding area!) - I just wanted to see what was the best place to buy and the local seems the best.He gives an invaluable great amount of advice and helps me with any questions I ask and the guy seems a great pro.
I wonder why I was looking anywhere else!
I ended up (after great thought and searching ) bringing home an amazing Anery female we have called Arial.
She is one of the best pets I have ever had , and although the guy I bought her from told me I might get Striked at at first , I say , she has not even looked like striking at all , a very peaceful gal , I must say!

Anyway , I have had her for 5 months now and she is coming on well , although I had a bit of a worry the other day when for the first time after 2 successful sheds (since I have had her), she had started shedding but only on her upper head and back. The Big man had told me to let her run through a damp cloth and all would be well.At my first attempt , nothing happened but after 15 minutes and holding Arial I noticed she just sat her head on my right hand and let me rub her down with the damp cloth , manouvering her body and helping me with the process!!!! IT WAS AMAZING !!!!! The skin just rolled off and she looked very happy and contented and just relieved to get it off!!!

It was great to see and do and all the better when I noticed how well she played along with it!

Anyway , I will try and post a couple of pics for everyone and hopefully keep up to date with everyone.

I do have one question though? Does anyone have any problems with their corn shedding and although this was the first time it had happened to Arial after the first 2 sheds being successful , is there maybe some underlying problem health wise that I should be wary about , although she looks fine and is growing all the time?

Wish all on the Forum the best and a Happy New Year to all and as I've been reading here , once you get one , the bug hits and you want some more......I don't know what my wife would say about that although my wee boy would be delighted!!!!!

Regards

Hoopy

Well, shedding problem are "common". With winter settling in your heat may now be on causing dry air which can be one cause of the problems. You can buy a hygrometer for humidity and try to keep it I think around 40-50% .During shed cycles try misting the Viv or closing up the Viv 1/3 or more with a towel to increase humidity or also make a humid hide. What are you using to heat up the Viv heat mat or light?

Keep us posted.

Hi, slightly off topic but i was wondering whereabouts in Scotland you are from as I am also looking to buy a corn snake hatchling and have not had much success in locating a breeder.

Hi , thanks Lennycorn for replying and thanks for the tips mate.
I'm using a heat mat at the moment , is this the best idea?

Hi lolli , I'm from East Kilbride in the West Of Scotland and got my corn from the Olympia Pet Store.Big Lorne that runs it has plenty types of hatchlings left and is very helpful.

Yes, heat mats or also known as uth (under tank heaters) are the best for belly heat which help digestion.

I use a piece of terra cotta tile over the area with the UTH .. Its just an attempt to spread the heat out, whether it works or not is yet to be proven by myself. I just figured it was safer for the animal instead of laying right untop of the heater itself..

Regards..

I got our 2 corns from Lorne at Olympia Pets in EK. He seems to know what he's talking about, and I phoned the shop a few times after getting them with questions and he was happy to help.

Hoopy-I had a terrible shed with one of the snakes when the weather started getting cold, and the central heating was on more than normal.
I invested in a hygrometer so I could keep an eye on humidity, and it was down at 15%.
Now when either of the snakes go blue I mist the tank twice a day, and also cover 2/3rds of the lid of the tank with cling film.
I aim to keep humdity around 45%-55% and we had a perfect shed yesterday using this method. :)

Thanks to everyone for the info , ive just bought a Hygrometer and will be using it soon as well as the advice of everyone on here.
