i just got a baby corn snake whom ive named steve. right now he lives in a 10 gallon tank with aspen bedding, half log hide, humidity cave and of course water bowl and heat pad. my question is that i have the heat pad on the side of the tank because of where the tank is placed i cant put it under. i fed steve yesterday morning and he has hid in the humid cave since then. im concerned that it may not be warm enough in there for him to digest and was wondering what i could do. i was thinking of putting a rock on the hot side under the lamp so that would heat the rock a little. would that work. please keep in mind that im a new mommy and am nervous about every little thing, including my stepdad holding him all the time and turning the heat lamp off. i use the heat lamp as supplemental heat source since its cold in the house from the ac. please reassure me im a good mommy and my baby steve is going to be ok. thank you in advance.

You're using a heat mat AND a heat lamp? Unless your house gets VERY cold, I would think that could run a risk of overheating. I've known plenty of people who mounted the heat mat on the side of the tank and did just fine. What are your temperature readings? If there's a good temp either side of the tank, I see no reason to worry about the placement of that mat.

Hi!
He might be in the humid hide because its too warm in his cage with both a heat mat and the lamp. Corns will go to where they are most comfortable. Read the FAQ threads and you will find lots of useful info. Congrats on your new baby!

Welcome to the forum!

Does your dad take your snake out and turn off the heat lamp when you say he shouldn't? That is not very respectful! Do you have a thermometer for temp at the hot side? If you have one you can tell your dad that he can only turn it off as the temp is too high. That would be a nice thing to do for him! If he wants to handle a corn as much as you do, let him have his own

I do agree with the others that 1 heat source probably is enough, so the heat lamp might not be needed at all.... only a thermometer can point that out.
