New puppy!

Daenerys

Mother of Dragons
We got a new puppy off Craigslist on Thursday night! He is an all white Siberian husky with one blue and one hazel/green eye. He has a reddish nose so I guess that means he had red parents or something. He is still very young. We named him Faolan, which supposedly is an Irish name that means "little wolf". We pronounce it "Fay-oh-lahn" which is probably wrong but oh well XD We also got him a collar before picking him up but it turned out to be too big still, I'm sure he will grow into it. We picked up a cheap blue one today for in the mean time. :p

Oh my gosh he is ADORABLE !! How old is he? What a cutie, You'll have a LOT of fun with him!

PS: Gorgeous name!

He is probably about 6 or 7 weeks old, and I know we will! I have wanted a husky for most of my life and I already have a nice long walking route planned out plus I plan on spending lots of time at the local parks! I'm so excited for when he gets bigger! And thank you :)

Yes you'll definatly need those walks and park visits so he doesn't die of boredom! LOL and just as a head's up, male dogs are either sooooo melodramatic or soooooooo feisty!

We probably wont be taking long walks for a few more weeks yet but we bought him plenty of toys in the mean time and he goes outside every 2 hours or so so that he learns to go potty out there! He has done it several times already, just need to work on getting him to not do it inside too lol.

6 or 7 weeks is really young imo for a pup to leave his siblings .... so start training right away!

good good ... keep up the socialization too (though I'm sure you are). Pups that play together, learn from each other - especially bite inhibition.

The first second I saw him I thought, "Oh what hiking potential he's going to have!" Ha, I need a Mal or husky as a backpacking buddy ... the whippet mutt just doesn't cut it!

Also, after shots are all done, get that pup to places with lots of dogs. I'm telling you now, you'll want to have him as worn out as possible. My little cockapoo didn't sleep for the first six months (at least I don't remember her doing so). Your pup is from an energetic breed, so run that dog around as much as you can. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

He looks like Gus from Iron Will. So pretty!

Trust me I have already been looking up dog parks (he needs to be 4 months old per their rules to go) and I work at a dog kennel that would allow me to bring him to work and we have 1 other dog too so he will be around plenty of other dogs growing up!

As for sleeping he is also doing really well with that! He was a bit whiney and howly for his first night but last night I didn't hear a peep from him. Then again we went to the Harry Potter midnight showing so he got a 2am bathroom break when we got back but still, after that I didn't hear him whine at all and it was like a 3 hour night for me cause I have to work this morning. I guess as long as we get him out in the middle of the night until he can hold his bladder better he will be a happy puppy!

Oh I love hiking! Only been on a "real" hike once but some of the trails at this one park may as well be called hiking trails instead of walking trails hahah

Sounds great ... you should really consider taking up hiking! There are some beautiful trails in NC and if you need a good pack for him when he's older, these are the best: http://wolfpacks.com/products/dogpacks/

I really should! The one time I went on an official hiking trip I loved it! We went to South Mountain State Park when I was in middle school I think it was...been wanting to make it back there for years.

He's very cute, but 6 weeks is very much too young to be away from siblings. They do not learn bite inhibition when removed that young, so not just obedience is necessary, but being around lots of other dogs that can teach him doggy manners is essential. Unfortunately, he's too young to vaccinate fully. First shots should be given at 7 weeks and then every 3 weeks thereafter until all 3 are given. You would need to have friends bring fully vaccinated dogs over to play with him now to keep him safer from parvo but still allow socialization. 7-12 weeks are critical times for socializing them or they lose that ability. They can be taught later but it's much, much harder. Walks on concrete should wait until the puppy is closer to a year to avoid issues with the joints but walks on soft ground and out in woods or at the park (once vaccinated) is great. Teach them manners early and you'll have fewer problems later. He is darling!
FWIW: Dog parks are some of the worst places to take dogs to socialize. Most dogs there are over excited and completely out of control. Owners rarely take an interest in what their dogs are doing and you often find very dominant dogs that might make early dog experiences bad for your puppy. Find more controlled areas and better behaved dogs to socialize your puppy with. His early experiences will affect his adult behaviors.

He is beautiful! How is his hearing (blue-eyed white dogs are sometimes deaf)?

Yeah, he left his family too young, but I'm sure you'll work hard to make sure he gets the training and socialization he needs :).

Congratulations!
