New setup

It's the same as that aluminum tape...it's mainly used for like, the pipes that come out the back of your clothes dryer...and on heating ducts and stuff...same thing we talked about..

The aluminum foil & foil tape idea was brilliant. I can put the cool side heater away when it actually gets to a decent temp around here (ok, er...July?)

Dillema!!! I have been running this second UTH stuck to the side of the "cool side" on the same, then it's own, thermostat. Completely cranked, I can only get the cool side up to 66.6 (that's kinda creepy).

It's still too cold!!! Now what? I guess I'll have to pick up a clip on lamp with some good clearance and a 40 watt bulb and get that going on the other thermostat as well. But before I buy, I'll take any and all suggestions on 'best type of bulb". I'll probably go tomorrow to pick that up.

Now what should I do at night? I assume the snake would not like a daylight bulb going all night. Would a night time bulb (something cool like moonlight) put out a decent amount of heat?

Do you have a thermometer with a probe telling you the temp of the thermostat on the cool side? I'm just finding it a bit strange that the uth is sky-rocketing if you have that thermostat all the way up..do you have the thermostat probe on the uth?..maybe its a faulty uth..

Oops..I meant in my last post do you have a thermometer with a probe over the heat pad to give you an accurate reading?

Yeah, I have the thermostat probe suction cupped to the back side of the tank (not on the heat pad, but near). The thermometer is located in the front of the tank and the UTH is stuck on the side of the tank (check out pics I posted earlier to see where the thermometer is). I was trying to raise the ambient temp of the tank to at least 70. I figure taking the temp of the UTH on the glass does no good. It feels warm to the touch, it is just not able to crank up the temp in a room that is 62 degrees to start with.

Slow down! All you really need to be concerned about is getting the warm side to a consistent temp around 82-84 and your snake will go where it needs to to regulate its temp. My snake room gets into the mid 60's in the winter. Even that cool, my snakes spend more time on the cool side then the warm side.

I'd return the second UTH too. my $0.02

Okay the uth is mostly recommended to be on the under part of the tank not on the side..the probe to the thermostat has to be on the glass right above the heat pad, and same goes for the probe to the thermometer..it has to be right over the heat pad for an accurate reading..this could be why your having some problems..

Yeah, I think I'm trying to do something it's not designed to do. I just wanted ambient temp to be ~70 F :awcrap:

Unfortunately I can't return any of the stuff I bought because I got it from a non-returnable sale @ 40% off. I'll just have spares (or maybe someday get a second snake!)

I woke up today and the house was 59 F. Are you sure this is ok? The only bit that is warm in the tank is the UTH right on the glass. I just...feel bad.

One little trick you could try and do is take a towel, fold it and cover cool side of the tank with the folded towel..this could help keep the cool side a little warmer..

The towel thing will work...I had to do that will one of mine before...

If you eventually want something a little more visually appealing..
Get a piece of plexiglass from a hardware store...a somewhat thin one...and cut it to fit into the lip that runs on the inside of your tank. The lip is there to hold the glass covers for fish tanks...so you could use it to set your plexiglass in and your screentop will still fit over it.
Ofcourse only if you have the room to do the cutting and a saw to do it with, but it would help, and look a little better than the towel.
