New snake hiding

Hello everyone. I'm kinda new, but been a member for quite a while. Well, I finally got my cornsnake, and I couldn't be happier. Anyway, I have a problem now. My snake loves climbing around, so I bought some knarled wood branch thing so she could climb. She loved it. Cut to saturday, I go to look in the tank for her, and she is missing. The tank was completely closed, so she couldn't have excaped. I take out the hides, and look under the substrate, and she is nowhere. Thats when I notice a semi large hole in the wood. I get a light and look in, but see nothing. Suddenly, while turning the wood, I hear a slight thud. I look in, and there she is (phew). That was a huge load off my mind (I only had her a week at that point. Well, now I know where she is, but she does not come out of the wood, or does, and goes back in before I get home or check. I tried to bait her out with a pinky (today was feeding day) but that failed. What else can I try to get her out? Once I get her out, I'm gonna either get a different branch setup, or find a way to securely cover the hole. HELP.

Thanks.

you can wrap the log with a bag of ice, and then wait. He wont stay in their too long... trust me

Welcome out of lurking :) Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do, but be patient and wait her out.

Thanks. It just sucks waiting, I want to hold her.

I'll try that if she doesn't come out soon.

You might want to wait until later in the day and wait to see if she wanders. Our new one appears to be shy. She's coming out around 8pm, esp. if we turn out my daughter's bedroom light and leave the dining room light to offer just a little bit of light in there.

I do check, as often as I can. I work at 3:30 in the morning, so I also check in the middle of the night, still nothing. Unless she hears me coming and darts back inside. lol. Anyway, I'll let y'all know when she comes out, forced or on her own.

Something just came to mind. When I was checking yesterday, she had her head poking out a little, and I couldn't exactly tell, but her skin looked a little faded (could have just been light reflection though). Could she be getting ready to shed, and this is why she is hiding for so long?

Well, she's finally out. I ended up doing the ice. Had to warm her up afterwards though. She was very stubborn, but finally gave in and left. Her eyes are cloudy right now, so she's almost ready to shed.

Glad you finally got her out. :) I remember Lady G doing something similiar, although I simply waited her out. Got rid of that ceramic tree and made sure I didn't buy anything else with tiny holes that she or Kieran could get up into where I couldn't get to them.

Did you toss the wood? :)

You could plug the hole with aquarium grade silicone. Just let it cure thoroughly before putting it back in the tank.

Poor baby! Yeah, I'd snake-proof the tree with silicon (just did that with Inez's tree before giving it to her) and make a moist hide for your girl so she can get ready to shed in peace. Take a Tupperware or one of those new disposable Ziplock containers, turn upside down with the lid on, cut a snake-sized door, fill with sphagnum moss from the pet store, get it damp, maybe even show your snake the door- mine all love them!

PS, Choco takes a good 7-10 days to shed, and I really miss him while he's in hiding. But with a moist hide, at least I can usually see him through the opaque walls. Maizey takes about the same time, but she just barely fits into her moist hide, so it's no problem keeping track of her and making sure she's ok, since she will hardly move at all during that time.

I agree with the others, either toss the cage furniture that has can't-get-to-them holes or hidey places or seal over those holes. I'm quite fearful that my snake will get "stuck" in there and since I'm responsible for what I add to the cage, it's my responsibility to not put anything in there upon which the snake can hurt itself. =)

Yes, I will either toss the tree, or plug the hole. Don't know yet. I just can't believe that I didn't notice the hole. Well, from now on, I'm gonna be extra aware of what gets put inside the tank. And I'll set up a moist hide today hopefully.

Oh, and I don't think she came out of the tree at all during the week, cause I put her over her water, and she drank a ton.
