Our first reptile pet. My wife found this guy on our garage door last week... cool, free snake...now after about $200 at the pet store he has a nice warm home for the winter.

Welcome to the site.

He's a beautiful red color. My fav color actually.

LOL

He got lucky running into your wife.. cause now he will be fed and warm.

ya...it was a sudden find...the snake was laying on the bottom ledge of the garage door and as she lifted the door, they came face to face...they both survived the meeting -lol

He/she was such a pretty color that we wanted to keep it, ... doing well, has eaten two times already and shed once. We have never had any sort of reptile for a pet before so this is all new...surprising how much information you can find on corn snakes.

I am by far a snake expert but he looks to be in the bloodred family. But like I said, I am a newbie to snakes as much as you are.

Corn snakes are very popular to have as reptile pets because they are known to be more docile... most of them anyway. So there's a lot of info on them.

That's a beautiful snake! How's it's temperament, and how is it adjusting to captivity? Or do you think it's a captive snake that just escaped? Makes me wish I lived in Florida.......Here in texas, we're more likely to stumble on a cottonmouth....

So how big is he and does he let you handle him? Because if he does it's probable that he's an escaped captive. And that makes you even more lucky lol.. already tamed.

I think he is just a wild snake native to the area, he is about 34 or 35 inches long, seems to like his new home i guess, he always is in hiding...the only time I see him is when I dig him out of the aspen bedding...I have taken him out each day for a few minutes do they get more active or is this normal?

I have fed him twice...a full size mouse, he grabs in a matter of seconds and downs in just a few minutes...I was amazed at how fast he could take down a mouse...I have feed live both times, figure if he is wild he is used to live mice. The first day we had him I threw in 3 lizards that I caught in the front yard for him...he ate one, the other two I turned loose after a few days,... have since learned that lizards are not a very good thing to feed them, to bad, I have a endless supply around here, lol

He is beautiful!! I think he is just a really red normal nothing else really looks bloodred to me. I am glad that he is eating in captivity that is a great sign that he will adjust well.

As far as eating lizards and as far as I know (I could be wrong) the biggest reason is you don't want to feed lizards is because you could introduce parasites to your snake. Now he may already have them because he was probably eating them out in the wild.

I would try to switch him over to frozen thawed. Most are able to do it with out a problem. That is better in the fact that you run less of a risk in them getting hurt.

new house

We now share space with the snake. Watch TV and snake at the same time.

Thanks, next time I am going to buy dark bedding...I think I will like the look of it better than the light aspen.

I think it looks like a nice snake home...hope the snake does.
