New Snake - Opal

So, I got my snake....but they shipped me the boy and not the girl that I wanted....which was partly my fault because I put my order form in for the girl. I'm not -really- upset, just kind of stuck on what I should do.

They've offered to do an exchange, but this means stressing the new little boy out more, shipping him back, and then going through the getting the girl in the mail again....

There's also the issue of the boy being too darn cute for his own good and growing on me...

I started out the journey really wanting a male opal corn, but the girl they had available had a really interesting/unique head pattern.....

So, what would you guys do? Either way I can't seem to settle with myself.

If I do keep the boy, I'm going to be looking for another lavender morph girl...

Getting the other would also mean getting a new vivarium set up, if you don't have one standing by. Isn't that another $200 or something (tank, bedding, bowls, heating, hides, extension cords --if you need them). Even if you're doing a bare bones setup (Tupperware, shoeboxes, newspaper), would it be more than you're willing to spend?

I know I'm new to corn snakes, but I'm not new to reptiles. And if there'd been a mistake like that in a pet shipped to me I'd probably weigh just how badly I wanted that pattern versus how attached I get to the new baby. This is an animal you're keeping for the whole of its life, right? Either getting the wrong snake becomes a funny story you tell later, or you correct the mistake now and save yourself some regret.

So... how many snakes do you intend to own at the same time, and are you willing for him to take up one of those "slots" for all his years?

I have a free 10 gallon tank that I would intend on using, (i know i'm going to need to upgrade tank size after a few years) but yes, getting a second snake would mean purchasing new hides, accessories, etc all over again (which I will be doing eventually anyway). My intention was to own and care for 3 corns (yes for their entire lives) I think for the ease of everything, I'm just going to keep the boy. I've looked through several photos and although the head patterning I was looking at is on the rare side, it's not -that- uncommon.

I'm glad you decided to keep him. I really don't notice any difference between the sexes except in the spring when breeding season comes around. I have an amel that is so sweet and with his peaches and pinks I keep calling him "her". His name is <3 (lessthanthree, he was a rescue and I kept the name they gave him), I call him "Three" or "lady"!

The only reason I had changed my mind and asked for the girl instead was because of her head patterning...which I've now seen on a few more lavenders, so, I feel confident that when I go to my first reptile show I can find a little girl :)
