New to Corns

My family and I are new to corn snakes. We received the corn from a family friend and have a couple questions:

1. What is a normal length of shedding time after his eyes clear?

2. In a 15 gallon tank what temperatures are recommended at each end?

3. During the day what is the recommended time for the heat lamp to be on?

Thank you in advance

1. 3-7 days (average 4, I would think)

2. 83 - 73 (ish)

3. When the sun is out. LOL! I leave mine on for 10-12 hours in the day. If it's a red bulb though it can stay on 24/7. Turn white off at night.

Congrats on the snake and welcome to the board. :)

Try to get the Cornsnake Manual by Kathy Love if you can. It's a good guide to Cornsnakes.

Yes, welcome to the forums (and cornsnakes)! I'm sure you'll find lots of great help here.

Hey Smog!

Welcome to the forums. I have my viv set at about 82 on the warm side and 75 on the cool side, however I've got my little guy in a 10gal tank.

Welcome to the forum. Great gift you got from your friend...lol. Let's see how long it stays as ONE corn!! :)

1. What is a normal length of shedding time after his eyes clear?

Yes, it is about 7 days for the shed cycle but if you are asking for how long after they clear up from their blue/hazzy look, mine generally shed the day after their eyes turn clear again but some go 2 days.

And about the light, like Spirit said, if it is a heat light as in a red light, you can leave it on all the time if it is a provider of the snakes warmth. If it is a white light, you can do a day/night cycle. One thing, corns are nocturnal so they don't need any special day light bulbs. Just the normal light in the room from daylight would be sufficient.

Have a great time with your new little one!!

Just outta curiousity, I have a 25 watt blue bulb that I was planning on using in the evenings after it gets dark out but turning off at night when I'm asleep. Can they be left on or does that just hold true for reds?

Well I suppose I should ask this too... are you just talking about a typical red light bulb or an infrared heat bulb?

I appreciate all of the input, however, I am a little concerned about the shedding of my corn. He (assumed) has not shed and his eyes went from the bluish hue to clear about 3 days ago. This appears to be a lengthy time for him, both according to the forum and according to previous owner. This is his first shed since he moved in.

There are two thermometers in his home. At the warm end it is about 80 (on the surface) and at the other about 70 (air temperature). His hide out is in the cool end.

We have a 75 Watt Floodlight on for portions of the day. This has been sporadic at best, so we have an automatic timer now.

I have a book on order, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Just wondering when I should be overly concerned that he has not shed or if there are things or ways to assist him.

I've always read that they can go clear anywhere from 3 - 7 days before the actual shed. No experience directly, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've read in several places.

Both mine took about 7 days when they had their first shed in their new home (thats from when the eyes cleared). And it took about 16 days from when my anery got a milky belly to when he shed. It may just be the new home thing, i wouldnt worry about it just yet as im sure he will shed when hes ready.

Thank you to all!! He shed for the first time, and it has been a successful one.

I appreciate the feedback, I was able to relax and let him do his thing. I did not see him shed.

There was a watery yellow liquid with a few black lumps and a white substance also found with him and his old skin. I am assuming that this must have been his last meal.

I have a 'fuzzy' to feed him or should I go with something smaller due to the transition to his new home or does it really matter.

That meal should be just fine. I'm a firm believer in the "try it and see" method of husbandry. After all, that is what facilitates learning. :)

I think blue can be left on 24/7, but I could be wrong. It might depend on the bulb. The one I'm using is called a "party light". Just a cheap ordinary red blub. If you're NOT using a UTH you might want an actual heat bulb as they tend to give you a bit more of a "basking spot", but to raise the overall temp this works just fine. I use the low wattage red just so it doesn't drop too low.
