New to Snakes

My husband and I purchased our first snake the other night (a young/baby snow), and this is completely new for both of us so hopefully we're doing it right lol.

We have "it" (haven't sexed it yet) in a 55g tank with a screen cover (and clips!). For heating we're using a UTH with a thermostat set at 86, and two heat lamps (day/night). We're using the lights just because where we live is prone to getting really cold and we wanted to make sure the ground and ambient temp was warm enough. We also have two digital (probe style) thermometers we have taped to the glass on the hot and cool side. Two hides, a water dish, and a few things to hide in around and under. Food wise our plan is to feed one pinky once a week.

All this sound ok? Any and all advice/tips would be appreciated lol. We've had the snake for two days and are already in love :)

I'll post some pics of our tank when I get the chance ^.^

I would remove the tape: you'd be amazed at how much damage your snake can do to itself with tape. I'd use a hot-glue gun to stick them in place.

If you want to determine gender, since it is a snow, hold it up to a bright light. If the entire base of the tail (area immediately after the vent) glows pink or you see three pink 'lines', it's male. If you see just one pink like that follows the vertebrae, it's probably a girl.

We're not really wanting to glue them down, but we figured away to get them to stay in place without tape though :)

I've also just learned (after 2 hours of panic, 30 mins of crying, and 30 mins of searching the forum) that we will be needing to get a new hide for the warm side of our tank... As we "lost" our snake thanks to a wonderful tree hide.. which is now broke. Ugh they really should think those things out before they make products like that btw :(

Those darn tree hides should come with a warning. We had almost 24 hours of panic before some one here tipped us off on them. That said, we just cut the branch in question so it is open. Still use the tree hide - Ember loves it.

I'd reconsider using hot glue to fasten down the probes. If you are concerned with removal, it is relatively easy to get the glue off.

lol after the panic and cutting the top off my husband threw it in the garbage and I was "ordered" to buy a new hide. Honestly I couldn't believe how smooshed up there she really was.

And also I think my husband might have me talked into some glue, and possibly a way to hide the cords a bit. Any one happen to know if the hollow/dried bamboo is safe for snakes? I know you can use it in aquariums but I wasn't sure about use with reptiles.

As long as your babe can't get inside it and stay there! As long as it's cut and split so you can always get the little tinker out, bamboo should be fine. Make sure to file off any sharp edges as it can be a bit splintery.

Added a bit more to the tank tonight (new hides) and also glued the probes down.
Don't mind the background the tank was painted on three sides when we bought it and we've yet to do anything about it lol.

the buddha? Yeah I love it, but I'm not gonna lie I totally glued/sealed shut all the little nooks she could hide in. I'm not about to have another panic attack like with the tree lol.

Hey, gluing the little nooks shut is nothing to worry about! I totally understand the panic of not being able to find snakes that are not missing at all! I would have done the same thing. Your set up looks wonderful, I am sure that your snake will live a long happy life in there :)

thanks :)
Pretty much the only thing I've got left to do is I'm probably going to scrape the paint, and replace it with a nicer background. I'm glad no one thinks it's too big though. The pet store employees looked at me like I'm insane when I told them I have a 55g for her. Generally though I prefer to have bigger enclosures when it comes to my animals. They can stretch out, and it means you can do a lot more interesting things with the decor and necessities :)

I just got my first snake (also a snow) about a month ago. For me it seems the first few weeks are the toughest (no handling, ect. had to wait to get a rheostat which caused a regurge but shes doing great now and is a happy active little snake! Still waiting for first shed though...)

Anyway, good luck, sounds like everythings good so far! :D
