New to the Hobby :)

StephanieWard

Do you hear them too?
Hello, My name is Stephanie. My husband and I are starting to get into the snake breeding Hobby. (though he has been doing it off and on for 20 years with boas and Burmese). I LOVE Corns! lol He doesnt think to much about them except the fact that he cannot say much "bad" things about the little cuties because of their LONG history.
My first encounter with them was a couple years ago when I went into a pet store looking for more corns ( i already had two baby albinos, pics below, they are almost 2 years old and het for snow, they are still kinda small though because we keep losing resources here in Oklahoma for decent mice). Anyways, there was this butter, she was soooo beautiful, and when i held her, she felt like, well........home. She was so loving, didnt want to leave my shoulders and went straight for the palm of my hand. The owner tried to put her back into her cage and she started to go into my purse! But she was also $130 bux which i didnt have (she was a very healthy looking adult about 3 years old). So i left, came back a month later she was gone :(, and ever since i have been HOOKED!

So now I have 4 corns (pics below) , the amels i got when they were only a few weeks old, the male is Houdini, and the female is Lady (sometimes miss priss, sometimes Princess, just depends on her moods lol). I received the other two corns a few months ago, the pet store owner said one was a miami the other was an oketee, but im not for sure.

This coming up monday, I will be getting an adult (male?) pink snow. And As of tomorrow (maybe, im still contemplating) is suppose to be a downpayment for a hurricane snow motley female '04, Zip Motley het snow male '05, and a Sunglow Motley het snow female '04. I wish i would have been smart enough at the time to save the pics of them from kingsnake before the seller took the ad down.

Please excuse some of the "mess" in the pics. Im also an artist and my supplies seem to be everywhere (didnt realize that til i saw the pics lol).

Now the one of the reasons why i am introducing myself today is because of my "maybe" buy of these three corns from kingsnake. The seller seems to be ok, the snakes are just freakin beautiful, but my husband seems to think they wont do anything for me because as he puts it "there are NO dominant genes in the corn world, its too complicated and basically all corn breeders do is "roll the dice". And he also thinks i jumped the gun when it came to those snakes, as i didnt plan out anything with them yet.
I will be paying out 350 shipped over 5 payments of 70 bux. But to be honest, even if I didnt have a "concrete project/plan" for my corns or potential corns, that hurricane snow motley was just to darn incredible to pass up!

So, I have until the end of business hours thursday (today actually) to decide if i still want to go through with the beginning down payment that is non refundable.

Sorry this is such a oddball intro, but i really need to talk to people that truly understand the corn world.

Thank you :D

Welcome to the forum, Stephanie :). Those are some pretty snakes! Looks like the last one is a Miami to me, but I'm no expert.

I don't know if I would call the first one an Okeetee....but IMHO the last one does look like a miami-phase. Miami and Okeetee are both line bred normals. Okeetees normally have very thick borders and very bright oranges/reds. Miamis normally have a lighter colored background (the best are silver/gray) and rich colored saddles. (I will include a few pics here of some of my miamis/miami phases). Check out Lee Abbott's website for pics of some beautiful Okeetees.

Corns are great because of the variety of genes. Yeah, sometimes we "roll the dice" but I think that is what makes it so much fun! It can sometimes be like Christmas - you never know what you are going to get!

This is Casey - he is a Miami from Huddleston lines (Carol Huddleston produces the BEST Miami's):

This is Dinah - a Miami also from Carol:

And this is Clementine - she was purchased at a show and is a Miami-phase:

Thanks everyone. Those are some niiiiice miami's you have there :D.

I went ahead and declined on the three from kingsnake, granted they were beautiful, but i want to wait til i have a better education of corns. If i cant tell my snakes apart from other snakes, i think that is a good indication that i need to research more ;). I want to be confident when i make my decisions.

Anywho, thanks again! im off to read the good stuff on this site :D

Wow!!! KUDOS to you! If more people were like you, there wouldn't be so many corns that need to be "rescued". I applaud you!

Great story! Always nice to see someone with a real love of snakes.

I think you did the right thing by passing up on the other corns. Nothing wrong with having them as pets, but if you want to get into breeding, I'd say you should be really focused - pick a few projects with planned outcomes that really appeal to you, then go after them with gusto!

Well, after i got bit by the "cornsnake bug" , i safely put that bug someplace safe, because after taking a longer look at my resources, finances, and really just how safe my place is to do all this, i realized that I realllly need to wait until after i finish my associates and get moved back to missouri, THEN i can start this wonderful hobby :). So, that is exactly 2 years down the road lol, i think that should be decent amount of time to learn about this world like i should (of there is never an end to learning).

I will however be keeping up with this forum and hope to become a contributing member soon, and of course ask question and get answers (if possible) to note in my "Corn Journal" for when the time is right.

Monday I am still getting my five baby balls, and the adult male pink snow that is promised me, and i have already made sure that they will have nice homes (the snow stays with me :D ). Ill show pics next week.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

Stephanie

Oh i forgot to mention, my fav's that i do want to work with are:

Lavenders
Pewters
Bloodreds
and probably the motley mutation. After seeing the bloodred striped motley i couldnt believe how beautiful the snake was (cause im not that partial to stripes ;).
I love the hurricane snows, but i havent seen to many of them and i understand that the motley mutation is still not understood (even in the boa world there is alot of crazy confusion). So for right now I am looking and reading up on those 4 i mentioned.

:)

So glad to have you here, Stephanie. Was fun chatting last night....at least until the baby puked all over me (TMI?)! Well, welcome!

Thanks Eddie :). Since im a mom i can feel sympathy for the ...uh....messiness of babies lol.....so no, not tmi....hope you got some sleep :D, chat at ya later
