It's possible to set up the egg box so the babies can hatch in your absence. What I did last year was fill a 66 quart sterilite with damp moss, about 3-4" deep. I put a shallow water bowl in one corner. The day I left, I put the egg container in the center of the bin, cushioned in the moss, but raised a little so that the hatched babies could get out and not be as likely to come back in and disturb the other eggs.
I put the bin in my adult rack, but you would want to put it anywhere with a temp of 75-80. You will need a SECURE lid. (You could also do this in a 10 or 20 gallon Critter Cage with a locking lid.)
I removed the layer of moss I had covering the eggs, because I also set up an Izon video camera, so I could periodically check in on the eggs visually. It was fun to watch the babies emerge, as we were driving to Sanibel Island! If you aren't going to be watching, I'd just pull the moss back to the corners of the egg bin, but leave a little as a blanket in case babies don't leave the egg bin.
This worked great for me; I came home to 18 happy babies all in two big baby piles in two corners of the bin.
