Hey everyone! I'm Joe, I'm from New Jersey, but I currently reside in Ohio for school. My entire life I've had an interest in snakes. Unfortunately, my mother didn't care to much for my interest, and refused to let me have on as a pet. Now that I'm older and living on my own, I've finally decided to get one. I got him about 5 days ago. He is a 2' Okatee, and I think he is only the beginning of a new addiction. I never even realized how great of a pet a corn actually is. Now I want more, and from looking at all of the pictures on this site, I think I need all of them. I'm especially interested in a couple of breeds. I'm very interested in any breeders in NJ, NY, Eastern PA, OH, eastern Indiana, or NW Kentucky, so please let me know if you are one. I had a few questions I was wondering if you guys could help me out with

1. I have a 20 gal tank, is that enough room for 2 corns?

2. Can your tank be too humid? If so, what are the signs?

3. Will Fir Repti-bark hurt my corn?

4. Who has an Abbott's Oka.? Because I'd love one!

5. Is it safe to ship corns? Can they die from stress or complications easily?

Hi Joe :wavey: welcome to the forum!

1. I have a 20 gal tank, is that enough room for 2 corns?

No. Only one corn snake per tank. There are many complications that can occur from cohabbing.

2. Can your tank be too humid? If so, what are the signs?

Yes. A sign would be if water spills and doesn't dry quickly. That can cause mold. Or cause your snake to get blisters. If your tank has a wire mesh top, this should keep the humidity from getting too high.

3. Will Fir Repti-bark hurt my corn?

I have no experience with that. I prefer aspen. It is cheap and easy to keep clean and does not have any dust that can cause problems.

4. Who has an Abbott's Oka.? Because I'd love one!

Don Soderberg is one breeder who sells amazing specimens of Abbott's. He can be found here: South Mountain Reptiles.

5. Is it safe to ship corns? Can they die from stress or complications easily?

It is safe to ship them. You have to be certified to do so.

Stress can cause complications. But if you follow basic husbandry, it is easy to keep corn snakes alive and well for a long time.

Welcome! Dwyn127 and Pasodama are breeders in Ohio that you might want to check out. I know dwyn127 still has a few available. I hope you don't plan to move back to NJ after college...I'm pretty sure only the red eyed corn morphs are legal there.

Guess you didn't read the CS.com rule book! Rule #54: All new members must post pictures of their snakes before continuing to browse the forum.:grin01:

AHhhhhh! So there is a rule about that... and it is rule #54. Noted for future welcomes! LOL!

Welcome to the forum! Rich and Josh have given you a GREAT start! Good luck and .... "follow the rules!" LOL!

Welcome Joe from New Jersey.
I have used Reptibark as substrate for about 4 years. My snake has shown no ill effects from being in it.
It may be harder for a small snake to burrow in, it's pretty chunky. I'm not sure on that, I never had a snake smaller than 2.5' in my house (to my knowledge).
When I change it the new stuff is a little moist, the humidity goes up to about 60-65% for a few days, nice if it coincides with her shed. After it loses some of the moisture the viv varies from 40-50% humidity.

2. Can your tank be too humid? If so, what are the signs?

?

The best way to know if your tank is too humid is with a digital humidity gauge. You can find 'em at most pet stores and probably at wal-mart too.

Welcome to the forum!! I'll look for pics of your new snake!!!
