Greetings,
I had some problems with my account here and had to re-register. Previously I was jasonn.

Before I ask questions let me introduce you to Mr. Ichabod Wadget Wiggles....

My daughter has had her Anery for almost a month now. He was about 12" long and we speculate about 7-8 weeks old at that time. When we brought him home we let him acclimate to his viv for 3 full days and nights as recommended by The Corn Snake Manual. After that my daugher and I started handling him for five minutes a day for the first week, 10 for the second and 20 for the 3rd. We give him a full 48 hours after feeding before handling him. We also handle him at the same time each day. He's a sweatheart of a critter with a wonderful disposition. He's never rattled his tail or struck out in any way.

He's a great feeder too and it takes him about 10 minutes to finish a pinkie. She fed him a fat one on Saturday and it took 15-20 min. as it was quite a mouth full.

He has a very distinct personality too. His days are typically spent in his hide on the cool side of his viv. In the evening he transfers to the warmer side and sits on top of his warm hide (we've taken to calling it pride rock). He had a little trouble getting up there after his big meal on Sat. My daughter said his fat belly kept from getting all the way up.
After a feeding he likes his warm side and spends his time either on or inside pride rock.

Okay now you now a little bit about our new family member, here's a question or two:

We're using reptile carpet as a substrate and purchased two pieces. We clean his poo as we find it but we're not sure how often to change his substrate or how to clean it? We're thinking we'll replace it every two weeks and clean the soiled one in a bleach solution being sure to soak it in plain water and drying it before placing back in the viv.
Has anyone used IOD4 for sanitation? I use it in place of bleach for brewing beer, it only takes two minutes to disinfect and can be rinsed clear very easily.

The pet store and some friends who own a Corn feed them once a week and that's what we've been doing. Our friends Corn is two years old and healthy so it seems to work for them. How often do most of you feed your young snakes?

I've posted an image. Is there anything remarkable about him or is he a typical Anery?

That's all for now.

Cheers,
Jason

My baby one i feed every 4-5 days depending on the lump (if gone in 2days i feed her every 4 if gone in 3 then every 5) and my bigger boy who's on fuzzies every 5-6 days depending on lump

and bedding wise I just use woodchips/shredded newspaper it's easier u just tip it out n chuck it away the only thing is takin the snake out to feed but having 2 in the same tank i have to anyway.

Great name for a snake! My other half informs me that our next snake is to be called Elvis. Hehe.

Anyway, you seem to be doing fine. Ive never used carpet so im not too sure about that but I have heard people say that they swap the carpet as soon as it is soiled and wash it. Then the cage is completely clean. I use paper towel, spot clean as soon as I notice a faeces and disinfect the whole tank and all contents every 3-4 weeks. I leave no trace of faeces in the tank at all at any time.

You could probably feed more often as Rachel states but you are by no means starving your pet. A rule of thumb ive been told to use is to wait until the second faeces after feeding or 4 days. Whichever is shorter.

Good luck,
Rex

I personally have no experience with reptile carpet (Cannot put up with the scrubbing. Paper towels all the way!) but it seems that people use 2 or more pieces and "rotate" them, putting in a clean piece when one gets soiled. If I were in your position, I would probably clean the carpet every time the snake pooped just because mine have a tendency to slide right through it and get themselves dirty.
I'm sure someone who uses it can help you out more though.

When my snakes were babies (less than a year) I fed them one pinkie every 4 days. Some snakes might have faster or slower digestion systems, so you will be able to work out a good feeding schedule as you become more familiar with your snake.
I understood (not sure if this is 100% backed up by facts and all, mostly my opinion formulated from various sources) that it is ok to feed babies more often than adults because babies are growing a lot more/faster than adults.
Once a week is fine; he will probably not grow as fast as one who is fed more often, but if getting him up to adult size as soon as possible isn't an issue with you and your daughter, I'd say to stick with that plan.
P.S. Fantastic naming job on your snake! Looks like a nice anery

I know many of you are using paper towels and newspaper but we want our viv to have a more natural look. I think we may go with repti-bark. My daughter feeds our snake outside his viv so impaction isn't an issue. Is the repti-bark easily cleaned? I imagine when her snake poos we just remove the poo'd chunks of bark and either clean them or toss them?

Also, one of Mr. Ichabod Wadget Wiggles parents (I'm not sure which one) doesn't have the yellow seen in an Anery type A. Is there a name for this Anery, type B perhaps?

Jason

I use repti-bark woodchips so the tank still has the natural look and they have rougher things to help shed and just chuck it out once a week for cleaning.

Rachel

Those bark chips look great imho , one of our corns likes to bury right under them , does anyone think this might be a bad thing and might harm the snake? or is it just a natural thing for them to do?

corns like to burrow the tighter packed into something htye are the happier they are lol mines having fits under his right now trying to shed.

Rachel

ahh ok , that would explain why he spends a lot of time trying to jam his head in the wormholes in his piece of wood then lol

For those of using Repti-bark, how do you clean it? Do you toss the poo'd on pieces out right away and leave the rest, or toss everything after a poo or... ?

Jason

Spot clean when you notice a spot and change out completely every 4-8 weeks. You can soak the chips in a sanitizer, rinse and bake in the oven until dry. Once this is completed you can re-use the cleaned chip. :)

I just usually scoop out the odd poo when I see it .. then chuck the whole lot once a fortnight
