Normal vs Hypo Okeetee

OK, being a newbie to cornsnakes, I think I am starting to get the hang of some of the various morphs and gene types. However I have a question.

I know that an Okeetee is a type of 'normal' with wider black banding, and deeper colours, however whilst browsing the forums I have seen some very prettily coloured 'normals', so my question is: is there a visual way of telling a 'normal' from a hypo Okeetee, given that the hypo will have reduced black borders?

Just curious.

Cheers

Ian

The big problem I see right from the start is that the Sunkissed morph has also been called "hypo Okeetee". Leaving the locality morph Okeetee out of the equation, as well as the Sunkissed gene, an Okeetee phase ideally has the wide black saddle borders and rich ground colors. A Reverse Okeetee is the amel version...wide white saddle borders with a rich orange ground color. IMO, a hypo Okeetee (using the hypo A gene) should have wide bronze saddle borders and rich ground colors. The hypo gene may reduce the size of the black bands, but technically reduces the amount of black pigment. You can find examples of hypos with distinct saddle bands, such as the hatchling shown (which I do not consider close to being an Okeetee, just shows pretty good banding). You need to selectively breed for this to create even better hypo Okeetees.

Here is a pic. I have in my "for sale" ad.
I put it in there to show the comparison of a Normal colored Okeetee vs. Hypo 'A' Okeetee.
You can really see the difference towards the tail.

Thanks for that. We actually ended up with a 'Hypo Okeetee', and until that photo was still unsure what we actually had. Various books using hypo okeetee as another name for sunkissed was not helping me either! :)

However the larger of those two, is an absolute dead ringer for Buster, so I can let my son know that he is a Hypo 'A' Okeetee.

cheers
