Obama Has Got Some Nerve

Susan

Go Ahead, Make My Day!
I do my best to stay out of the political threads on this forum, but sometimes, certain things just need to be shared. Hubby sent me this a few days ago and I just got around to viewing it and I agree. Why the double standards?

I wish Obama would "come clean" about the NDAA.

It's a classic case of propaganda. The message is not one of investigating the truth. The truth would hurt this man's agenda, no matter which truth it was. It's the fear that he's trying to capitalize on.

Black preachers are just as capable of the Anti-Obama rhetoric as anyone else. Maybe more so, in some ways, because they often have to try and convince an audience that already identifies with the president. And in order to fight out against Pres. Obama's progressive (pro-rights) policies (that contradict the preaching of some churches), they need to have an extra viciousness in what they attack him for.

And at the end of the day, Obama articulated a point that most Americans already think about. People can use him as a scapegoat all they want, but most people won't stop at the "not-Obama" aspect of Mitt Romney, and they will ask these questions for themselves. Whether it was Pres. Obama who made those statements, or Ron Paul who made those statements, I still would have agreed. Romney DOES need to open up his finances, if he expects to be a trusted presidential candidate. And he can't just get away with ignoring the problem, simply because 'some' people out there have lowered the bar so much for Obama that they feel Mitt Romney can get away with it.

And to Mitt Romney's credit, he's smart enough to avoid the "birther" issue. A finger pointing game of who's lying is not something that Mitt Romney should be interested in.

It's not "hatin'". If Obama offered the churches money, and promoted the churches ideals (as they would like), they would be registering voters right now for him.. which, although could be said of most voters and their ideals, theirs is especially pitiful. It comes on the back of great revolutionary people like MLK jr., only to use that platform to spread more hatred and intolerance.

The "birther" issue is so incomplete to me too (as in.. incomplete evidence.. incomplete critical thinking.. incomplete everything). It's not Obama's secrecy that has people questioning his religion. It's his unusual transparency. You couldn't tell by his policies what religion he would subscribe to. And that bothers people (like PASTOR Manning).. So you can't complain of "separation of church and state" on one hand, and criticize Obama for not showing us his 'real' religion through his policies and behavior on the other.

Unfortunately, nothing I can say will change a mind. The deep roots of racism in this country still sees all dark skin as foreign. And for whatever reason, it's always entertainment for 'some' people to see a man such as "Pastor Manning" attack the nationality of Barrack Obama, while they ignore his clear motive to be against his policies (religiously).

To add.. had Pastor Manning supported Obama, and this been a video on him registering black voters to stand up for racism in this country, I don't think that you all would be so entertained with "ah-Passa-Mannin'"... that's all you'll allow some people to be.

Careful who all you paint with that paternal superior brush of yours, Michael.

Bogus, Lavender! You've talked about a rising south (that also killed Martin Luther King jr.. the closest living man to Jesus, in many people's eyes), and now you have the nerve to start talking about "Passa Manning" "worshipping Christ, not race".

As for being careful, Chip... I'm quite careful with how I think about this. Which makes me all the less concerned with speaking on it. I know what it is when I see it. And the posting of this video (as well as the video itself) stands for one thing, and one thing only.

BTW, pointing out racism doesn't mean making it about racism.. it's already there. So politically (because everything that people do under oppression is political) I am just responding.. which is different from accusing as well (or "painting with a brush"). Accusing is a waste of time for someone who knows they're just going to get denial. Especially to a statement that you know is true, regardless of whether someone admits it. So whether you like it or not, the decision to have a black pastor criticize Obama's nationality and faith (especially in the "bible-belt" south), was a purposeful, political decision. The decision to post the video on this thread was also political.. as well as the decisions to to post in agreement with the video.... so it's not my decision to be political about it, more than it was the fault of posting (or condoning) this political propaganda for promoting such an ignorant message.

History shows you (if you look at REAL American history), that this puppet game has been alongside white racism since the founding of this country (enter Columbus day, btw). It's how political leaders kept the wolves in sheep's clothing.. to have preachers delivering a message of fear and powerlessness, to scare a particular group of people into NOT having a feeling of self worth, and not voting or fighting for a political interest that might serve them best.

Bottom line, politicians and the church leaders eat at the same table, and it hurts business for the evangelical (and radical) preachers to have a president that opposes their message. Which as of now, is one of anti-rights for many Americans. And the extreme cowardliness to promote this material is one (although not surprising) is blatant misinformation.

^ typos everywhere probably.. that's what I get for responding to this foolishness, on no sleep, with a post-migraine wide-awakeness.. oh well. If it's poorly stated, it can't be worst than the thread itself.

Typos are the least of your worries. You make these thinly veiled accusations of racism at Susan and presumably myself (you said "y'all" and not just Lavender), and didn't address her point at all. You speak from a place of smug superiority like you are just so wise you can't be bothered to take the time to educate us. I am not sure that on the entire Internet I've ever met anyone who puts his points across in a less likable way. You even irritate me when I agree with you. Before making the accusation that someone is racist, you'd better be damn sure of it. It's a version of Godwin's law with a little straw man thrown in for good measure. One or two episodes of crying wolf on that one and you can watch the whole world tune you out. I really hope you grow out of this. You're a smart guy, and I think you will. Honestly I think in 3-4 years, you'll get douche chills just reading how you've worded what you've said in this very thread.

But enough about you. You really think Obama is pro-rights? Too bad I can only put ten laugh emoticons per post. Look at how protesters are being handled in the US lately, Anaheim is a good place to start. Google Amber Lyon/Bahrain. Google NDAA. If Bush had done that, you'd never stop banging your trashcan lid about it. And I'd support you. Though probably be damn irritated by your "enlightened" style in doing so.

"Douche chills"... "smug superiority"... about as unsubstantial of a way to respond to my post, as the "birther" movement is to have made this video. And don't 'presume' to tell me that I'll watch the world tune me out, because I'm a "little straw man" "crying wolf" either, because that's hypocrisy at it's best..

Tuning out a message of little straw men is why only a FEW people post in support of the OP. I thought that I was being nice by actually taking the time to think out a response for something so blatantly foul.

You don't see the people who are just (politically) against Obama, or pro-someone else, as being a part of this witch-hunt either. They have the decency to keep it between the lines. I choose to respond, because I don't feel badly (arrogant/unfair/etc..) doing so, in the name of people out there who feel offended by this material, and too outnumbered to respond.

Again, I'm not accusing anyone of anything, myself. I'm pointing out what is (and has been), not who is. And if someone feels threatened enough to defend racism itself, than it's not my problem to work that out for them. If people stopped perpetuating racist ideals, I would stop responding.. it's called political activism. It doesn't just require marching, picking up a gun, or protesting to do.

Michael.

Just a quick question. Do you feel that those who are focused on racism simply perpetuate it into reality?

OC

No, I don't believe that racism is perpetuated into reality whatsoever by me discussing racism (although I genuinely do appreciate the question over an attack). But that's sort of like asking whether a tree that falls alone in woods, perpetuates making a sound into reality. Whether people are there to hear it, whether I'm here to make the sound.. it doesn't matter. It's still there.

Sure, if racism wasn't discussed by me, there would certainly be less friction over the angle of this discussion. But trying to "avoid perpetuating racism", by way of ignoring material that is damaging to the message of equality, only allows racism to exist. And the "Birther" issue is one of racism, coupled with the super-Christian-conservative movement of homophobia and oppressive views on women's rights... plain and simply, it's not something I subscribe to.
The critical remarks on Barrack Obama's nationality, ethnicity and race are all equal parts of the racism, as well. It doesn't doesn't always have to be a white face that sheds political ideals damaging to black people. Black people can subscribe to ideals that are, for the majority racist and oppressive. And the message in this video, is that a dark skinned face, who doesn't subscribe to extreme Christian doctrine, is one that should be considered foreign.

And now that some of the "black Christian conservative" movement is being threatened by Obama's policies (that contradict what they preach.. Sanctity of marriage for ex.), they're suddenly willing to sell the message of intolerance and ignorance for the very politicians that would have used that message against them in the days of the Jim Crow south. And where they all are standing on the backs of people like Dr. Martin Luther King jr. (as black preachers, whether they admit it or not), they're cowards to the very freedom, justice and equality for all that he stood for. And they're the ones perpetuating racism (and the other ism's and ophobia's) into existence.. by promoting the ideals of politicians who do the same.

And this isn't to say that all people who disagree with Obama are racist.. I hate when people can't make that distinction, because I see many people not posting on this thread, that don't like Obama whatsoever, that I have great respect for as people. But the unsubstantiated claims of his nationality/religion/etc are completely unnecessary. And to have a "Pastor Manning" be a driving force behind that message just reinforces as has always been done.. divide and conquer. And if racism can be used to promote private interests, it will will be.

Thanks.

Thank you for your clarification. I am one of those who disagree with many of President Obama's decisions, and yet his race makes no difference to me. I prefer to judge a man based upon his actions alone, regardless of race. I would agree with you that the media, and this "Pastor" are dancing a very fine line.

I find that most of what I "hear" on the TV and radio has been pre-programmed by our media to cause the greatest reaction. They play to our passions and desires to try to spur us in the direction they want. I hope that people can see through these dilusions. I apologize if i'm not making my point eloquently, but I am lacking in the ability to express my thoughts in words.

I in no way meant that we should ignore racism in any way. It should not and cannot be tolerated in America. However, I find that its a difficult subject for many because it puts them on the defensive. I appreciate your ability to share your opinions with passion in a appropriate manner. I would encourage you to address the issue and not members of the forum. The true enemy here is racism itself, which is sadly a battle that has been fought, and will continue to be fought as long as ignorance exists in our society.

Just a few thoughts from the brain of OC. Sorry if I rambled. Again, I appreciate your clarification.

OC

^ Thank you!

Honestly, I really appreciate your response to my comment. I'm glad that I could communicate my feelings in a more understandable way as well. It's how we learn/grow.
