Odor from Viv - ??

My corn, of unknown sex (but named Bobby, by my son) was bought as a small juvenile in January. He is kept in a 20gal long viv with Aspen chips, the usual items (water bowl, 2 hides, some decorations) and a small UTH on one end.

He/she eats well (2 fuzzies/week) has been growning well and generally done well.

For the past day or so, I have noticed a stinky odor coming from the tank. This surprises me, as I recently did a full clean-out/scrub-down. I went in this morning and spot-cleaned out 2 or 3 poops and am hoping this will do the trick.

I am wondering if the odor is merely a house-cleaning issue, if there is something related to reaching sexual maturity and if I have to bruminate him/her. This is my only snake, like I said, don't know the sex and have no desire whatsoever to breed. Is bruminating necessary?

I have never had a problem with odors in the viv before-
:shrugs:

Brumating is not necessary and is usually only done when you want to prepare them for breeding. The odor could have been from those poops in there. The odor can be quite strong if you have more than one especially when they get larger. I suspect now that you removed the poops and replaced the dirty aspen you won't notice it anymore.

you're probably right

The odor lingered for a while, but seems to be going down. I will look for some of those "reptile safe" cleaning wipes, so my "spot cleans" can be more thorough. You must be right about them smelling more now that they're bigger. This was never a problem in the past and I didn't really even need to spot clean - just the whole tank scrub-out from time to time.

Wait until she gets to the size most of mine are. They leave poops about 2" around in there.
