I've had it with mice. From this point on I will no longer have any remorse for their sorry butts! Just got home and found another female chewed up. The remaining pair are now in front of my Grey Rat's cage just for the sake of torture. I hope they have a slow painful death tomorrow :angry01:

When I first saw the title, I knew who it was :crazy02: . Sorry Mike. Better to go buy them weekly, then tear your hair out so much over trying to raise them. And hey, at least you know that when you go buy mice at the petstore, half the time you will come back with a new snake!:grin01:

You know me too well! :grin01:

Just to rub it in some more. I was looking at my own mouse stats, and my retired breeder male fathered 124 babies since November '05! :p :nyah:

Thanks!
My soon to be retired male will be in the belly of a snake tomorrow! :eatsmiley

Sorry to hear that, Mike! It seems like they are just out to get you. I don't know of anyone else who has as much trouble with creatures that tend to be quite prolific!

Sorry to hear that you came home to another chewed up mouse. Hey Mike, at least you tried.... and probably gave them more chances than most would have. Mean little buggers!

Better post pics of that new snake when you get home from the pet store next week. :D

Spineys? As in Spiney Desert mice sort of creatures? Are those snake food or pets? (I would think they were kinda prickly for a food item, unless they were just for pinkies) I've seen clips of those in nature shows, are they really spiky? How curious :)

Are the spineys still doing well for you?
No, the male died about a month ago. He got real skinny and just keeled over one day :shrugs: I got 2 litters out of them, I have fed off two of the smaller ones to my Emoryi. The Mom and 3 remaining offspring are cohabitating peacefully :wavey:

Piper Yes, they are Egyptian Spiny mice. They are not as coarse haired as you might think. If the snake tried to eat one butt first, it might be a problem, but I haven't had an issue with that. Here's a pic of both adults and newborns

They are really cool looking, and didn't know you could buy them till a saw Mikes, I've only seen them at Disney World before... I never did ask if they can be fed to the snakes, but I'm sure they probably are in the wild? I guess I should know that before I buy some... The tails are covered in flexible spine like hair...

I love their eyes :D very cute!

I had a very rough start with my mice too. Came to find out that the mice I was buying from the petstore as breeder colonies were coming from a local reptile guy. He would take breeders that cannibalized their babies or retired breeders. No wonder I was having trouble. It became funny when I figured it out.... but not at the time. :bang:

Sorry, but I've kinda cooled off since I posted this, and I witnessed a little rodent sex this morning, so I'll wait for a few weeks until she gives birth. Then I'l kill them! :laugh01:

that's a good one mike. You know, reading this makes me wonder if my thoughts of starting a large enough mouse colony to cover my feeder needs it worth the try. I have currently 15 or so mice that I am breeding. getting a about 30 pinks a week right now, but not enough to go completely self suffecient. might keep the thought alive though.

No one listens....but do 2.8 and then let the fittest survive. It works wonders for my colonies......40 of them!

Oh my but those pinkie spineys are the ugliest pinkies I have ever seen.......
I love them! LOL!

Try like Morh says~ start the colony with 2.8 (or like I do with 2.10) then when you see the males start to scuffle~ cull off the smaller one. Leave all the females that survive to reproduce. Don't take ANY out for ANY reason (unless the mouse you are removing is NEVER coming back). Leave them alone. I know~ everyone tell you to check~ prod~ screw with the mice......leave them alone. Ignore them. Sometimes some pinkies will get killed~ Momma mice are protective~ if you leave them alone they'll get around to killing who ever is killing pinkies. If you screw with them too much they won't establish a strong hierarchy(SP) and you'll keep having trouble. Feed them, clean them, ignore them. The ignoring part is important.

Good luck!

Check this one out. A zebra mouse!

Description
Larger then the common pet mouse, but with almost a "wedge"
appearance to them, This very active little rodent is low
maintenance and odor free. They are a beautiful blend of earth
tone colors with 15-17 wheat colored stripes extending from their
face to the base of the tail. Awake and active during the day, they
make an excellent display animal.
