Once my snake comes ..

SMR SG Corn Snake "Rogue"
Since it's my first how should I go about getting it into it's viv?

he's not going to know me or me him...

:sidestep: what should i do?

Well I would just slowly let him get to know your scent, then pick him up and place him in there. Let him crawl around and get to know the place, hopefully he adapts well. I bet he has no problem getting used to it.

When I got Inez- she came by UPS- I resisted all temptation to mess with her and put her open deli cup in the viv and let her come out on her own. I think I saw her again the evening of the next day.

If it's your first, take it out of the deli-cup, inspect it, and then put it in its absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt, 1,000-point-inspected, escape-proof enclosure.

well.. mine... is uh 24'' long lol from don SMR.. first snake so i'm sorta not sure what to think of a snake thats 24'' hehe im excited but also very respectful gloves work for getting bit by a snake that size?

The worst bite from a 24" corn is less painful and injurious than the playful attacks of a 10-week old kitten. The trick is to control your reflexes so that you don't hurt the snake recoiling from a strike.

I have a silly 2.5 pound chihuahua. He likes to use me as a chew-toy on occasion, and it really hurts now and then. I don't have a corn nearly that heavy, and their teeth are a tiny, tiny fraction of the size of the dog's. Would you worry about moving an attitudinal kitten or chihuahua puppy from one place to another? The largest corn presents an even less serious threat...

good just wondering... so what should i do once he's here? i'm guessing put him in the viv any way i can and then just leave him to his home for a few days?

Yes, that's right. Once he's in his viv, by whatever means lol, he should be left alone for a MINIMUM of 3 day. A week is good to make sure the snake is settled in, although I personally leave them alone for 4 to 5 days.

After that period of time try the first feeding and begin handling the snake for short periods of time each avalable day. Work up from, say 10 minute handling sessions, and your snake should do great. Remember to not handle a snake for 48 hours (that number varies. some say 36, others 24) after feeding.

Good luck!

:crazy02: thats funny,"gloves"...don't worry you'll never need gloves with a corn snake. Its not so bad getting tagged by a snake,,keeps the respect neutral

He's not going to bite you! He's a cornsnake! And not a fragile, flightly little hatchling, either. He'll be fine. What day does he arrive?

this week i hope.. I was short on cash because of my viv. hell my whole setup was around $550 and thats without the snake LOL

I got started for less than $100.00(snake included).I had 3 extra tanks with nothing in them,so I used the 30 gal I got from a friend,(for free).My snake only cost $39.95 :grin01:
