One corn, two corn...?

keep the snow in her viv. and take a light from ur desk the kind with an incandescent bulb maybe 60 watts and put it next to the viv.. dont let it touch the glass if u are worried about digesting this will make it a little warmer but not enough heat will penetrate to do damage.. if u have a desk lamp like the kinda with the movable neck use that and sit in on a box next to the tank. make sure its a good 6 to 8 inches above from the screen so it dosnt melt. ive had to do this more than once my animals are fine. look in the DIY section for homemade rheostat and see if u can get dad or one of ur guy buds to make that with u its all of 7 bux and a heating pad when u can. dont go to petsmart or petco, buy one online it will take a few days but even with shipping its cheaper. your babies will be fine. if u go to lowes they have digital thermometers for a few dollars it doesn't have to have a prob just put it in the viv the snake wont care. that way u can see whats going on in here aside from the little round thermometer they give u in that kit.. it only messures air temp. ok most ppl are gunna give me a hard time for this post. and i love u all more then u can imagine but i dont mind if you hate me lol Good luck hun and thanks for asking questions its the best way to learn. :)

Ali, the snow is a new addition since she got the normal. She didn't get them at the same time... Which would have me worried more about quarantine... Any new snake should be quarantined for a few months before you can trust it to be so much as in the same 10 feet as the established snake's enclosure... Let alone housing them together.

Alright well then that changes things some. I didn't know she got them at separate times. I am a believer of quarantine of a new snake. If you happen to bring mites in then BOOM whole collection has to be treated. Lots of risk yes.

The question here is what can this girl afford to do the best as possible, even if it cannot be "ideal" due to financial problems. Clearly, buying a new screen lid for the melted tank is a good option. Another option is buying a little critter keeper which is like $5-$10 max. I am sure both of these are doable. If not then stick a divider in.

They are right about quarantine and cohabing it isn't a good thing if there are other options, which there clearly are here.
Let us know how it goes =)

Ali

As far as quarantine, I feel that it is "unnessecary" for a pet store snake to be kept in qu. for months on end. I kept her away for about two weeks and have seen no signs of mites ect.

I am planning to get a screen lid as soon as I can, but as many of you know I live a LONG way from the pet store and hardly ever make it down there.

I have put it a divider, but they can get around it if they try hard enough.

Pet store snakes need to be put in strict quarantine more than snakes from most breeders. Pet stores don't know how to take care of their animals, and goodness only knows what happens to them, health-wise, between the pet store receiving them (or before!! You don't know where they're from...) and the customer (in this case, you) buying them. The only snakes I, personally, am more worried about with quarantine are rescues and pick-ups from such places as the average Craigslist ad.

It is not a bad idea to treat any snake you get as if it were contagious, sick and infested with mites no matter what breeder it comes from. Not to assume the worst about any breeder but mites and disease can come from anywhere - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Quarantining one snake is easier than losing many down the line or having to go through the expense of treating an entire collection instead of one snake.

Thanks for the info. I will be sure to be more careful with my next snake I buy!

I realize the last sentence in my last post my have been a bit confusing. By "The only snakes I, personally, am more worried about with quarantine are rescues and pick-ups from such places as the average Craigslist ad", I meant "The only snakes I'm more worried about than the average pet store's snakes are. . ." If there was any confusion, I hope that helps clear it up. =P

Very true. I've been treating all of my latest pick-ups like they have some sort of "snake plague" and mites, simply for the sake of not having to regret anything later, and despite some of them coming from breeders I KNOW I can trust! ;)

COerriccaRN, I'm very glad to hear that you understand the value of quarantine. Hopefully, that understanding will carry through to your actions when you get another snake--no one wants you to learn that lesson the hard way.

Also, I must urge you, again, to look at The Bean Farm for your UTHs and thermostats. If you have the same size tanks and heat pads for both snakes and keep the tanks very close to each other (side-by-side or "stacked" on a shelving system), you can often, successfully, use one thermostat. I hope the Bean Farm's prices are within your current "range"; it's much easier to get things done immediately than to wait! =)

Actually, my two snakes are on opposite ends of my room, due to limited shelves and stuff. I didn't want to keep them on the floor
