Ordering mice

Hi all
I am considering ordering some pinky mice from The Mouse Factory.com, has anyone used them? They seem pretty reputable. But the dilema isn't that really, it's that I am not sure whether to order the small or large pinkies for my snake - he's about 13-14 inches and still pretty young. I've had him for about 6 months now. I've been feeding him frozen feeders from Petco which aren't that big. So does anyone know which size would be healthy for him? I just want to maximize my money here - I know I could give him 2 small pinkies but I just don't want the large ones to be too big. They are about 2 inches in the picture on the website. Thanks for any help!

Emily

TMF is great. Edna will take good care of you. Get the large pinkies. If your note big enough for them yet you can split them with a razor blade. You will be needing large soon. Feeding two small costs twice as much.

Did you look at the close ups of the two pinks, to see if the larger ones are about what you're feeding now?

You might want to also order a couple packs of fuzzies, and a pack of hoppers. (They won't increase the cost of shipping very much, and you will be needing them soon enough, and TMF packages them in vacuum packs, so they will store nicely).

Thanks guys! Yea I did look and the large pinkies are about 2 inches and the ones I feed now I'd guess are only about 1 inch give or take a few centimeters. So, ok great, I will order them from TMF and get the large ones. When do you think I will need to start feeding the fuzzies? Are they the same size as hoppers, or are hoppers the next step after fuzzies? =)

Oh and if I do get the fuzzies will they store for a long time? I guess it depends on how soon I should be feeding him them. thanks

I purchase mice from TMF too. Typically, I remove the mice from their original packaging and reseal them in smaller packages of 10. You can keep the mice in great shape for well over a year by doing this. Once you open the first package of 10 you can either reseal it or place them in a more accessible container or freezer bag.

This is the food saver that I use:

:D

Vacuum sealed, they will last over a year in the freezer.

If you do NOT have a vacuum sealer, leave them sealed until you need them, don't break them up unless you can re-vacuum seal them.

I'm so excited! I leave mice in their original vacuum packaging till I need that pack, then I divide them into lots by size and put in ziplock freezer bags, and put those in Gladware containers in the freezer. I've had pretty good luck with avoiding freezer burn using that method.

But yesterday I had some down time at work, and after memorizing every thread on every reptile forum, I went shopping. I got this:

Now I will have control of my many pinks!

And I will keep them in these:

I will have the freshed FT mice ever! I can store silkworm food and dragon greens in them too. They get very nice reviews.

When do you think I will need to start feeding the fuzzies? Are they the same size as hoppers, or are hoppers the next step after fuzzies? =)

If you look at the TMF site, it gives the fuzzies and hoppers weights in grams. To know when to move up, you can feed a prey item as wide as, or one and a half times as wide as your snake at its widest part. If the lump from feeding is gone 24 hours later, it's ok to move up to a slightly larger prey size. There is also a feeding chart called the Munson Plan, which involves weighing your snake and feeding a prey size as listed on the chart. I have found this to be quite helpful.

Hoppers are the next larger size after fuzzies.

Great thanks you guys! I really appreciate all the information! =)
Just one more question....I'm sharing the order with a friend and so we will have to open the vacuum sealed bag...however Nanci you mentioned you put them into ziplock and then gladware...will this also work for my situation? And do you put like 5 in each bag or 1? Once the seal is broken do the mice last for a long time? And by long time I mean like at least 6 months, more would be better of course. thanks again!

I pack the ziplock pretty full, and roll it to get as much air out as possible.

But grocery stores are selling a very cheap vacuum sealer that people have posted about on here- that apparently works very well!

My exact method for pinks and fuzzies is I sort them according to size and number the bags or, with larger mice, write a weight range on it. Then I feed from smallest to largest. So I have three ziplocks with pinks numbered 1,2,3 and I squueze all the air out of them, then put those three bags into another ziplock, squeeze the air out of that, put that bag in the Gladware.

Check with the vendor, perhaps they could specially seal your order separately so you don't need to break the vacuum seals to divide up your order.

I just got shafted by Big Cheese today order didn't show and they forgot to call to tell me that. I have really liked them but now am short on large pinks. Who did you all say vacuum packs beside Big cheese?
Thanks
John

alrighty thanks again! I email The Mouse Factory for an estimate and she said they actually come in packs of 50 pinks so I guess that eliminates the problem of splitting the order anyway. I will def be looking into a vacuum sealer.

If you look at the rate chart, it tells how many of each size come in a pack.

I just placed my first order with TMF and Edna was great and very helpful over the phone. Very pleasant lady.

My order was at the front door 24 hours after I ordered it and everything was great. I enjoyed playing with the dry ice (be careful).

So Far I just put the original packing in the freezer, but when I open them to feed this Sunday I will separate into weekly feedings and then do separate vacuum sealed packages.

I highly recommend The Mouse Factory.

Oh great thanks for the feedback for TMF - that reassures me. So one more question about feeding: I feed 1 pinky every 4-5 days and the bulge is gone 24 hours later --- so I'll order the lrg pinks and some fuzzies and that should be ok right? I think what I mean is that if I order the fuzzies it wont be a waste if I don't need them for like 6 months or more?

I had the same question, but now have a different one - possibly a dumb one. Do you split the pinkies before or after thawing? Can it only be done with pinkies (not that I have a strong desire to do it to anything much bigger)? Thanks.
