Orlando area herping?

tradernick

Just another Florida guy
I wanna go herping. Ah the great (sweltering) Florida outdoors. I saw some Gopher Tortoises yesterday in a local park and now have the bug to get out there and find snakes, etc.
Does anyone have experience herping in this area? I'd love to try it...a little hiking would do me good.

Nick

Nick,

Lake Jessup, Tosohatchee State Park in Christmas has some of the biggest wild gators I've ever seen, Brickyard Slough in Sanford, Econ in Oviedo. Seminole State Forest, Sanford.
Here in Lakeland the afore mentioned Van Fleet, Withlacoothchee, Gator Creek, Circle B Ranch.
South of St. Cloud at Three Lakes and Avon Park (Avon must be contacted ahead of time for any hiking as is still used as a Navy bombing range) where I saw a Florida Panther.
Just to name a few.
And ya, the Ridge is a great place.

Thanks I want to follow up on all of those...though I'm not particularly interested in facing off with a large gator lol.
I walked part of the van fleet trail the other day...walked about 3 miles total and decided I want to buy a bike lol. It's a nice area...basically a remote wooded sidewalk thats wide enough for a car, though obviously they're not allowed. I saw some gopher tort burrows and a small black racer but that's all.
Thanks for all the info!
Nick
