Our Lonely Corn and Taiwanese Beauty

Ah, no; just a bad habit when I'm thinking. I didn't even think about it and she was probably banking on that ;)

I'm not sure on the next girl's morph. I'm thinking an anery of some kind. I mostly just want to contrast Scarlett. Any suggestions?
 
I want our corn collection to include: Amel Bloodred, Hypo Bloodred Corn Snake, Sunkissed, Caramel Motley, Bloodred Stripe, Anerythristic Motley het Stripe. I love the bloodred stripe... by far my favorite. But the next corn is Katie's pick so we'll see what catches her fancy.

Oh, no suggestions from me... all the morphs have their own particular beauty and every person has their own tastes, so just get something you're happy with. I've got a little bit of everything without going "high end" or striped. When I first got into the hobby, I was VERY impulsive (like a kid in a candy store), so I guess my suggestion would be to LOOK around, make plans and make sure what you get is ABSOLUTELY what you want.

Don't get me wrong, I love EVERY ONE of my snakes. A little more focus BEFORE would probably have me in a better position breeding wise. LOL.
 
Once we are more settled down the real collecting can start. If all goes to plan, in a 1 1/2 to 2 years we are going to be making a cross country move with 7-8 snakes and 3 dogs. Let the hair pulling ensue... But then once we are settled and careers started the reptile room shall be quite nice. I doubt we will ever get into breeding snakes and if we do nothing to serious. Its going to be busy enough that we are going to be doing breedings for police/protection working line Malinois (anyone that knows the breed will know the stress levels there).

I'll make sure to look around before making a decision. In October, Sheldon and I are going to our first Reptile Expo! I'm very excited and hoping to see some beautiful animals there!
 
Sounds like a plan! If breeding isn't in your future, then the real "thought" doesn't have to be there and you could go with anything that looks good to you both.

I love lavender snakes... so I've got those. I've also got 2 fires (amel bloodreds) that are smoking. The rest are a huge hodge-podge that I'm trying to make plans about with my 7 year old daughter, Amberly. LOL.

BTW, I LOVE Black Milksnakes too. Try looking for my "Shazam" thread and you'll see what I mean. A friend was in a tight spot and she gave me her two... at least temporarily so I've got 3 of them! Maybe I'll get to breeding those one day.

As for reptile expos... have fun! I've been to a couple (there's one today and tomorrow that I'm missing in Tucson) but they're TINY compared to the ones on the coasts. There's another in November that I'm going to... but with empty pockets so I don't get anymore. Window shopping for me!
 
I think I actually have already looked at Shazam. I'll look again to refresh my memory. We'll see how full our pockets are when we leave. I just have to keep reminding him (and myself) "okay..we're going to have to move in two years...let's make sure we can actually move everyone safely and comfortably." Oregon is a long way away from Michigan!

When did you start this addicting hobby?
 
I've loved snakes all my life, but mom was afraid of them, so they weren't allowed in the house (we DID keep some ring-necked snakes and even a small rattler in Kansas... but don't tell HER that). Then, when I moved out, I was in seminary and Hawaii for 10 years... and couldn't have snakes in seminary OR Hawaii. So when we moved back, I decided to go ahead and dive in! LOL. Now, 30 snakes later, here I am! :)
 
My mom is terrified of snakes. Her only comment when I told her I was lucky enough to be given a cute little corn was 'oh..well, it looks like you can never move back home!'
 
:) My mom threatened to NEVER visit me... but she has. I even catch her "marveling" at them. Sometimes, if it gets too much, I put a posterboard up to block her view of the snake in the living room. LOL.
 
I'm waiting for the day she'll actually hold my girl. Scarlett is a bit too squirrelly for her yet. I'll wait until she's calmer before bringing the subject about..just in case she agrees. For a while, she had a 'pet snake' that lived under her boat cover in the summer. She checked on this snake every day and was even brave enough to take a picture of it! I was so proud.
 
Such a good girl! I'm so happy I was lucky enough to get a snakey that is willing to eat whenever I feed her! She's always on the hunt after she swallows the pinky, too...darting around my fingers and waiting for seconds!

LOL... I love it when they eat this way... at least when they're young. For a while, they look like a strange creature with two heads. LOL.

When they're older, I tend to worry more. My LTR is now eating full grown mice... BACKWARDS the last two times. When the limbs of the mouse don't "fold" properly against the body, I get worried. BUT Luna's been fine both times. So I'm sure I'm worrying for nothing.
 
She usually eats them head first, but Sheldon dropped it when she struck out so she just nabbed it. I think she's used to me snatching back up so she DOESN'T eat it backwards! I started getting nervous because I was feeding her in her tank at first and I was slightly paranoid that she'd eat some of her substrate. But now she comes out for her meals and I don't have to worry!

Okay, this may be a silly question, but what is an LTR?

That Taiwanese Beauty is definitely fit for the name! A truly gorgeous snake. I'm assuming they're rather large constrictor snakes by the way people were surprised to think you'd put her around your neck?

Thank you very much! They are a medium sized snake. Ours is approaching a little over 7 feet or so so she still could grow some more. I have heard of some getting to 10 feet. They average 6-7 feet for males and 7-8 for females. I would love it if our girl was one to make it to 10 feet, but we'll see.

The reason for being careful with them around your neck is that they are quit a strong snake for not being a boa or python style constrictor. THen there is the beauty snake attitude reputation. The Taiwanese aren't know for being as naughty as their Blue cousins (talk to Fred about this... and from what i've been told his isn't even as bad as most) but they are a fairly snappy snake that are veryyyy temperamental. They can be sweet hearts one day and determined to taste your blood the next. If you are patient with them and careful handling them they are a great snake for any collection. Great looking and get to handle (most of the time).
 
She has gotten around my neck once and constricted slightly (I think she felt like she was falling, because once she regained herself, she loosened her coils) and it was an eye-opener as to just how powerful she really is. Generally I just drape her across my shoulders, but she was pretty active that day and got between my arm and my neck :)

Can't wait until Scarlett is big enough to drape.. right now she likes my hair, but can only chill on my shoulder if I'm very still on the couch or she'll start sliding right down.
