Had some fun taking pictures the other day - Pancake was out and exploring. I changed the background and added some more plants to her tank, and she seems to love the extra cover. She'll be shedding soon, so I wanted to get some before pictures of her color to compare with the after. :)

I've been thinking about switching to cypress for that very reason. I don't know that I'd like orchid bark as much because Pancake loves tunneling and will use the same tunnels over and over again, which hold up nicely in the aspen. I've heard that cypress should act similar.

That is a beautiful picture by the way. :)

I'm not sure about Cyprus mulsh tbh but dark substrate will make your snake's colours stand out amazingly well . Aspen just makes white snakes look washed out . My snakes bury under the orchid bark all the time but it won't hold make actual tunnels ....

Great viv! I wouldn't switch. Pancake obviously loves burrowing. Nothing is better for that than aspen.

Thanks Nanci! I love how Pancake uses every inch of her viv. I keep the aspen deeper on the right and she burrows through that like crazy. The hot hide (low left) and the platform hide (upper right) seem to be her favorites. She tends to be a lot more active at night, and it's been fun checking for 'Pancake tunnels' with the kids in the morning.

Why not try a bit of compromise ..... keep the aspen for the 'tunnels ' BUT have a shallow layer of dark Orchid bark on the top , your snake will look amazing and when it all gradually gets mixed together it will be time to replace it all anyways. :)

Getting some exercise. We had an old wine rack from ikea, and I wondered how she'd like climbing on it. She seemed to have a blast winding around the dowels. She actually stayed on it for quite awhile before leaving. :)

Pancake is so cute. I need to get us a wine rack for sure. They are so great for snakes to climb on.

I just noticed in looking back through your pictures you have the same cave for Pancake as I have from Mandy. It's just perfect for an adult corn snake!

Nice to see Pancake enjoying a bit of monkeying around. :D I really want to come up with some kind of inexpensive climbing perch or rack for my bins, now that a lot of my snakes aren't getting handled nearly as much. Never hurts to add some enrichment and a chance for more exercise.

I really love your viv setup! I want to do something multilayered like that with a pair or trio of garter snakes.

DollysMom - Thanks. :) We think Pancake is a sweetie for sure. My 6 year old, who can be a bit timid with animals, is particularly fond of her. And Pancake loves that cave! We have one of the warm as well as the cold, and she is usually found in one or the other. I've found that she doesn't seem to use the door all that often - she tends to make 2 burrows towards the back that she uses to enter and exit. lol I guess they always find their own way.

Dragonling - Pancake seems to enjoy her viv. I had a plant on the back glass by the second level, but ended up taking it down - she seems to prefer skating the glass to get up. And when she goes from the second floor to the first, she stretches waaaaayyyyyy out before burrowing into the aspen. There was one time I caught her taking a drink from above, which looked pretty uncomfortable, lol.

It was really warm and sunny the other day so I decided to take Pancake outside for a little sunshine and to take some pictures of her color under natural light. It was so relaxing to have her wind around my hands while sitting back in the sun listening to the kids playing. I think she liked the heat as well. :D

And in other news... 10 days ago fed Pancake a live ASF, which bit her. I've been monitoring the site of the bite and it's healed up nicely with no signs of infection, but needless to say, it made me even more motivated to switch her to F/T. I was concerned she wouldn't switch because her previous owner had tried and she spit it out. Anyways, on Friday I decided to give it a try with an ASF I had euthanized and frozen when she was on her hunger strike (due to shedding it turns out). It took longer than I thought to thaw it out and get it nice and warm. I put it in a baggie, and placed it in a cup with hot tap water. I switched the hot water out 3 times before I got it up to 85F (measured with my infrared). She ate it like a champ!!! Just nosed it a couple of times to identify it as food, opened wide and ate it up. I was so relieved. Pre-killed or F/T from here on out!!! No more nasty rat bites.
