Paper towels as substrate

Flygning

Axe'!
Earlier this evening, probably an hour ago, I cleaned all of my hatchling's cages, washed out their water dishes and gave them clean water, and put down fresh paper towels. And, as I've been sitting here watching, three of the four have somehow spilled their water so that the paper towel gets completely soaked. Since I've never had any snakes on paper towels before, I don't know if this is a common problem. However, I would like to find a way to prevent this from happening, because it makes the box extremely humid and the air goes kinda stale by morning. I've got water bowls that they can't tip, but they crumple the paper towel so that a corner dips in the water and slurps it up. Does this happen to any of you, and how do you prevent it?

Welcome to the world of hatchlings!

It happens all the time. I just change the paper when needed.

Use newspaper. paper towels are to absorbent. I think newspaper works better and it's free asuming you suscribe anyway. And yes thats happened to me thats why I quit using it.

CAV--I can understand changing it when needed, but what do you do with it needs it every other hour?? Perhaps I will try newspaper, or my roommate's t-shirts.... :devil01:

Once a day will be fine if it gets wet.

What kind of water dish are you using? I've found that the easiest way to reduce spillage is to change the dish type or reduce the amount of water inside. You might checkout a different dish and see what that does.

I fold the paper towel so that it exactly covers the floor and doesn't leave any spare around the edges that can dip in the water. Are they crumpling the paper by burrowing underneath it? If so, you could discourage that by giving them more hides. I find that if I put a dry shedding tub into their tank, with some dry, crumpled paper towel in it, then they take up residence there.

All right, I'll give them more hides, and perhaps find them different water dishes. I have noticed that only one of them actually uses the hide I gave him. Thanks, all!
