Pennsylvania Snakes

Since I don't own any snakes yet, I want to try and be more active so everyone can see I'm a real person and not a troll, etc. I finally realized that I could post here and actually have something to talk about.

These 1st two pictures were taken at my parents house..my dad has "pets" in his shed. There are probably a dozen or so Eastern Garters that live under the floor and travel around the building.

The rest are all from my house, under a board at my back door. I only realized they were there at the end of the summer, or I would have managed to get more ringnecks. There are several Redbelly snakes, 2 different Shortheaded Garters, and a couple Eastern Ringnecks.

You can see 2 ringnecks and a redbelly in the container..I had to quickly catch as many as possible to "save" them from my husband. There were actually 5 snakes under the board.

Different redbelly..you can see the differences in coloring between this one and the last one.

Shorthead again in situ..notice the missing end on his tail

Another redbelly...worst smelling one of all..he musked something terrible.

I couldn't fit this in the first post.

My favorite one out of all of them, the first little redbelly with the pretty coloring, he was fine with me holding him and never musked.

I'm not lucky enough to ever see many snakes up here (which is odd...I'm right on Lake Erie), but the little red belly snakes are some of my favorites! I caught one in our barn this past summer. Great pictures, I'm jealous that you find so many!!!

You're snake rich! Beautiful thread.
I grew up in south-central PA, near the Susquehanna. We had more snakes there than where I am in VA, also near a river.

At my parents house I've always found snakes, I've lived in this house (much higher elevation) for a little over a year now and that was the first time I'd seen even a single snake in this whole town. I've worked in this town for 4 years now and never seen any. I came home from work one night and my husband told me he'd hit a snake with the lawnmower..of course I was excited to see what kind. I went out and searched the yard until I found it and was so upset to see it was a ringneck. I'd never seen a live one before.

The next day I decided to search the yard and started with the board at my back door because it was the only form of cover we have. Lifted it up and there were 4 ringnecks, 1 redbelly and a dead shorthead garter. I think by walking on the board we had squished the garter...I have since fixed that. I caught at least a snake a day for the next week. I also moved them to the top of our yard to a bunch of rocks because my husband is terrified of all snakes. He's an Iraq vet and was forced into the sewers to check for people/bombs and there were venomous snakes in there with him.

Oh, Hallie, I graduated from Edinboro University in 2007 and only saw one snake up there and that was because a couple guys caught THE TINIEST garter I have ever seen and let it lose on my floor. Of course all the rest of the girls absolutely panicked..I still have no idea what happened to that poor little thing.

Great pics! I love these threads because I live in a large city in California and the only "wildlife" we have are birds, pretty boring after a while.

I go to Edinboro (and so does my little sister)!! Small world. :) What was your major? Where are you located now?

Criminal Justice was my major..my husband graduated from there as well with a Communications degree and he is a 2nd LT thanks to the ROTC department.

I'm in the middle of nowhere now...about 15 minutes from where I grew up (which was Smethport) and I'm sure you have no idea where that is. It's about 2 hours from Edinboro.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone.

Ah, I'm a biology major, so we probably never had any classes together or anything. I was there in 2003-2004 and then again starting in spring of 2007. I switched my major, so I'm going to be there another year.

I know where Smethport is! I have friends (and an ex) that are from Johnsonburg and I also have a friend from Eldred, both aren't too terribly far from there, right?

I started in 2003-2004 too so maybe we had Gen Ed classes together..although I'm not good at remembering people sooo I may not remember you anyway. I lived in Shafer, but I went home every weekend and never really made any friends until the next year.

Yep, Eldred is like 20 mins from Smethport and I can actually smell Johnsonburg on rainy days from my house :puke01: because it's about 20 minutes from where I live now.

I didn't live on campus, I commuted, but I had friends in Shafer. I'm pretty bad at remembering people too. I really didn't have too many Gen Ed classes, as I was a Pre-Pharmacy major and our curriculum was pretty focused on bio and chem classes.

You mean you don't love the smell of Burg? How can you not? Actually, the smell doesn't bother me. I grew up near a paper mill and both my parents worked there, so I was there quite a bit. I really need to make a trip to Burg one of these days for a visit and a trip to the winery in Wilcox...they make the greatest wine!

I complain about Johnsonburgh every time I go through it..which is usually when I'm going to Dubois. It's better now than what it was when I was little.

That winery does have awesome wine, I haven't been there in awhile either..hmm..maybe I should take a trip.
