Petco!!

McLOVIN

McLovin From CALI!!
Hi yes iam new at this so this question might be kinda lame and newbie..haha ,but i was wondering if it would be okay to bring your snake to petco with you when say making a weekly visit to pETCo !! i just need a bit of advice starting out with my new guy Mclovin hes still to small to really handle often but when hes a bit biggerTHANKS.

I probably wouldn't on many levels:
Why do you want to?
The other reptilesat Petco could have diseases which could spread to your snake?
I've never asked a snake but don't really think they would enjoy an outing, unless it's to Disneyland where it's rumored a really big mouse named Mickey.
So with a smile on my face and with lots of positive energy, I'ld say 'no". :) susan

I would not recommend that.

A reptile there could be diseased or have parasites that could endanger the health of McLovin.

alright thanks for the info susan.i was just curious.and the mickey joke i do have to say that made me laugh when i read that.haha.soo no outing to petco. dont want my Mclovin to stop lovin.. :crazy02:

I can't see why you would want to. It's not like there are "snake toys" or "goodies" he could choose from, like a dog or parrot might...

I work in a shop, and the only time I ask people to bring their snake(s) in is if they have specific questions that I need to see the snake to answer. Otherwise...I just don't see the point to it...

I think that I know why. They allow you to being your pets into the store unlike most other retail locations who really frown on that and ask you to leave.
Im assuming (and go ahead and shoot me if Im assuming wrong) that its because you are soo happy with your snake and want to show him off to everyone that you can. Same as I did when we had a garage sale. 100's of people walking up and down the driveway and my wife and I are out there with our 2 corns like its no big deal. Some scream and walk away like we're insane and others want to know all about them. SOOOO FUUUNNNNN

:-offtopic How funny we just had a garage sale it was a community thing. We only had a couple big items so I was doing my snake thing. Many stopped and said Oh! a real snake, but the winner was the couple driving by the man stops and gets out asks if it is real, I say yes, his wife started screaming get back in the car honey. It was too funny.

Hey, there'll be time. Just stand outside taking 100 pictures on every sunny day. And since you live in Cali...you'll be taking alot of pictures, I s'pose...

Alot of people have asked me if I take my snake with me to the shops (not petshops, just shops in general) etc etc. Personally, I dont because of a few reasons:

1. Personally I think it's morally irresponsible, some people are genuinely TERRIFIED of snakes and I don't think it's fair to ruin their shopping experience by terrifying them out of their wits. It will only increase the bad feeling towards snakes I think.

2. It stresses the snakes out

3. I have this horrible, gut-wrenching fear that some bizerk, handbag-swinging Whench will hit my poor little snakeling out of my hands and will proceed to squash my poor little darling in a maddened state caused by fear.

Petshops are different though, I think that if you walk into a petshop KNOWING that they sell reptiles, you must expect to come into contact with them! lol Personally I am TERRIFIED of big lizards like iguanas and beardies etc but I expect to see them in the store so that helps! lol I can prepare myself! lol

But taking MY snakes into a petstore...nope, I wouldn't want to risk them getting ill from other snakes. :)

My feelings exactly! (Except for the part about being terrified of big lizards... I just don't like them. :grin01: )

lol Well, maybe terrified was a bit of an exaggeration, lol Let's just say they give me a serious case of the heebie-jeebies and I am wary of them and aware where they are at all times! lol

But I would far, far rather handle a lizard than a frog!!!

Although it has been a LONG, LONG time ago, I can still remember being a teenager with my pet snakes, and wanting to share them with anyone who would be willing to admire them. It was a whole lot harder to find somebody to admire them back in "the old days" though! So I can really understand where you are coming from.

Although it might be somewhat stressful on snakes to have a "day out on the town", if the snake is well established and used to a lot of human contact, the stress is probably minimal, assuming temps are correct and care is practiced to avoid situations in which the snake is clearly stressed.

But instead of going to a pet shop that sells herps (which could possibly carry parasites or diseases) and in which non herpers shop, consider joining your local herp society. Our group encourages younger members to bring in their herp and give a short talk about it, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with us. We also have a pet contest once per year - everyone enjoys that!

Or ask a teacher in one of the lower grades if you can come in and educate the children about your pets. If not a school, then perhaps scouts or other groups. Once you have found the proper venue, you and your herp can enjoy a day out, and you can share him with people who will really appreciate him.
