Mouse eaters...

***note, the above snake did only eat one mouse. He just was having so much fun constricting dead mice that I kept handing them to him. He finally ate mouse number 5 while constricting the other 4.

I like that pic so much...I thought it was worth quoting you just to revisit it in the thread...LOL

That is TOO much...how cool...
I have some that are aggressive eaters...
Anything that touches them becomes part of the 'constriction'...including fingers...or the edge of the feeding tub (I have actually had one haul herself up on the edge with a mouse in her mouth trying to constrict the tub)
That pics definitely takes the cake...

EDITED:
Hey...is that ghost in the first pic? TONS of yellow...just curious what the genetics were...

lol thats cool, I jus now learned how to crop pictures in my...uh..Dell Picture Studio program thats on my computer so I'm saying good bye to links! lol

Dont mean to be picky'

Excuse me Ray Ray, I don’t mean to be a critic and all and I don’t want to start a fight, but are you feeding your snake in its normal house??

I have just heard that it can be bad to feed them in their enclosures and not in a separate tank, because when they see a hand coming in the tank they incorporate it with food… Is this correct or like an old wives tale?

And if yes, wouldn’t your snake learn who you are after time and not bite you?

I feed some of mine in their enclosure...and some out...

And it seems that some of the ones who always get fed out are some of the ones that are most prone to snapping at my hands...UNTIL they are out of the enclosure...LOL

Just takes getting used to your scent...

Most of the strikes that occur are at feeding time...when I smell like a giant mouse anyhow...LOL

Just depends on the snake...

I have some Dumeril's boas that will ONLY eat in their enclosure overnight...
But are absolutely docile when I reach in and remove them...even when they are in feeding position (hidden under the substrate with their head sticking out)...

Probably not a bad idea to feed outside the enclosure though...not only does it help to keep them from associating the enclosure opening with food...but it will decrease (eliminate is a better term I guess) the chances of substrate being ingested...

Thanks alot for clearing that up, It has just been something I have been rased by' thanks again'

:) no, he is in a deli cup, the one i brought him home in. I have fed him in there ever since ive had him. I dont think the plastic of the deli cup shows up good but thats what he is in.

My corn when I purchased him came in a large rubber maid ware thingy’

The thing that threw me off was the bedding in the deli cup, I never knew people who bedded the deli cup, but come to think of It’s a rather good idea. All I have in mine is a large paper towel to soak up anything that the mouse lets out, but now that I have recently switched to frozen I do not have to worry about the mouse peeing on or biting my snake. :bounce:

I don't bed the deli cup, I sat the deli cup back in his viv after i had put him and the pinky in there and closed the lid......:D

Here's an interesting one I stumbled across. :grin01: :sidestep:

I have had a weird experience with my corn who I recently (2 feedings ago) moved up to fuzzies. He should have been on fuzzies a while ago, but I was getting rid of the extra pinkies I had.

Anyways, my snake, Torque, seems to need more of a grip, or leverage to get the fuzzies down. To do this, he backs his tail up over the edge of the rubbermaid Im feeding him in, and wraps it around the top. It seems to allow him to get it down easier. When he's in the rubbermaid and just on a paper towel or two, he seems to wiggle around a lot and doesnt get it down, until he decides to wrap his tail up over the edge.

There isnt any problem of him doing that right? I watch him while he heats, he'll eat with 10people standing around him... but yah I watch him, so I know he's not going to escape from the rubbermaid, just thought it was a funny thing for him to do.

There isn't any problem with it. If he likes to do it, more power to him. No hands makes it a little difficult to hold the slippery little thing. If holdning on to something works......well....

Excellent group of pictures from everyone who's contributed!

Mangrove,
I know Alias had pretty much covered this already, but in my opinion it's somewhat of a wive's tale. I think the biggest concern with feeding in the viv is ingesting the stray bit of bedding material as opposed to associating the hand with food. I have a very very aggressive feeding male that is just a doll when taken out and handled. I can have thawing mice smell wafting through the room, go into his viv and take him out and he's as docile as can be. Put him back, close everything up, reopen it two seconds later with a mouse in my hand or tongs, and he instantly turns into a raging serpent of power! After eating his meal, and giving him a half hour to calm down, and I could reach in again and he's a little 'teddy bear' again. With feeding up to 50 corns a week, this is pretty standard. I've never been tagged by a snake when it's not feeding time, I'll get some tail rattles, but that's about it. I've only been tagged once during feeding when one of my little girls was just entering shed and missed the mouse . . . should've used the tongs that day!

Anyway, just personal experience to relate concerning the feeding in the viv stories. I'd heard that too when I first started out, but the reality is for anyone with a considerable number of snakes, what's the alternative. How much extra time is involved (not to mention housing equipment) with taking everybody out for feeding each week?!
