Picking Up New Snake... What Type Is It?

Hello,
Im picking up my first corn tomorrow. Pictures were sent to me and while its very cool looking im curious to know what type it is.

Im also getting the cage and accessories for $60 USD. 20 Gallon tank with locking lid, etc. Is it worth it? The corn is a 6 months old im told. I will be keeping him in a smaller sterlite container since he is so small until he is older, or ill just divide the tank to a 10 gal.

If he is 6 months old he should be eating bigger mice then pinkies. Mine is all most 8 months old and it can eat large hoppers or small mice. sorry I don't know a how lot on the different types I'm still learning. but I do know it should be bigger then that. My is just shy of 2 feet long and when there babies I have read that your suppose to feed them twice a week. I tried to space the feedings to about every 5 days with the two new babies I just got.

Um, I see. The guy said he feeds every other week. I dont know if this is healthy or unhealthy. I have heard of every week and every other week.

Feed small meals (about the size of his body at the thickest point) weekly. Every week, without fail... Especially for babies. That looks like an anery, though I haven't expanded the picture for a close look. The important thing is, what are the temps in your viv? Hot and cold side, check 'em, report back, put hides on both ends, FWIW -that water bowl seems too large for a small glass tank -just from a humidity standpoint. Otherwise, your viv looks good.
You're going to really enjoy having having this new pet! Just see to the correct heat and lid and 90% of the time you will have a good experience! Check the care sheets listed on this site and all over the Internet. And post here about it's progress! If anything goes wrong (and it shouldn't), you're at the right place for good information!

I have 20 2008 babies, born between May and Aug, so lots of 6 month olds and some a little younger. I feed the younger ones pinkies, small-medium-large, depending on the size of the individual snake. The 6 month olds, are 24" if not close to it, and most are eatting fuzzies. I feed all my babies every 5 days right now. Some of the new ones that I have, that are quite small I may start feeding every 3-4 days or 2 pinks every 5 days, to get them going good.

This is posted on Kathy Love's website, as she states she uses it and lots of others also abide by this feeding schedule.
This is the Munson Plan: (if you do a search of this forum you will find lots of info on it)

-Single pinks (2-3g) every 4-5 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 4-5 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (24-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+)
-Jumbo Adults (40-50g) every 7-x days (Snake = 400g+)

Hope this helps you!!

Thank you very much for replying with this info. You made me feel better about the new corn. I do not own him yet but will be picking him up tomorrow.
The cage set up is how this guy had it. I WILL be fixing it quite a bit. Smaller water bowl, hides on hot and cold side. I will also get a rheostat (spelt right?) to adjust the heat. I will adjust temps according to the care sheet on this site.

As for size... Is he healthy just from looking at the pics? Sorry for my noobiness, thanks again

Nothing seems wrong, but from a couple of head shots -no way to study much. Check the snakes' body for "kinks" or any irregularities -that's the most common screw up for babies. At 6 months, it should be a solid foot-long pencil that is strong and determined to crawl. Don't handle for the first night or two, let it settle in. With proper temps and it not escaping (looks like a good screen top), you'll have a cool animal for years to come.

Just an FYI, all snakes do grow at different rates, so even if he was feeding weekly on pinks, and they were the right size, there'd still be nothing wrong with your snakes. I have 3 snakes that are between 4 and 5 months old that are still eating pinkies, and probably will be for the next couple of months. There's nothing wrong with them, they're just growing a little slower than the others. And sometimes, if they do grow more slowly, they might live a longer life because they weren't under the "stress" of almost over-eating (power-feeding) to grow up quicker to breed.

Never thought about that. Im glad you pointed that out, that reassures any and all concerns.

I will take pics and post them with my new corn in my possession. Thanks to all who have replied and left knowledgable info.

Not necessarily... depends on how much the snake weighs, not age. My yearling technically should be on pinkies stilll, but I've just started getting some hand-picked fuzzies for him. And twice a week is wwway too often. Again depending on his weight, he should be eating every 5 - 7 days.

Be very careful feeding that often... you could start a regurge cycle. I know I tried four days with Gunn and back up it came... we'll stick with 5 - 7 days.

Remember guys that a regurge is caused when the rate of decomposition is higher than the rate of digestion. Even at optimal temps, a busy feeding schedule can force a regurge just as quickly as feeding something too large. Feeding twice a week is not horrible. I personally sick with every week, but twice a week will still yield a healthy snake. Slow growth is not always a bad thing :)
