Plastic Igloo Incident

Now that it's over, it is rather funny. Home for lunch and noticed Mama Spiny Mouse sitting atop her igloo gnawing frantically on the plastic. I opened the cage and she was stuck in the darn thing. Reminded me of Tom Hanks in The Money Pit when he fell half way through the floor. She had apparently started gnawing around two of the little holes on top and created a larger hole. Just big enough for her fat butt to fall through. Her hind legs and rear where on the underside! Unfortunately, I was too concerned with her well being to even think of taking a picture. After about 5 minutes of gentle pushing, I was able to ease her through, and I thought I heard her say "thanks" :grin01: Here's a pic of the Igloo after I get her out. She appears to be OK and thought I'd pass this on so it doesn't happen to anyone else. :wavey:

I knew I didn't like those Igloos for a reason. I thought they were meant to be a "hide". If so, then why are they translucent and gay colored? Never made any sense to me. Kleenex boxes work better anyway. ;)

However, a warning to anyone who might use an ill-designed heavy bottomed bowl for feeding rodents. The easy tip-able nature of these are a deathtrap to mice, especially the younger ones. I found out the hard way in my weaner bin.

They excavate underneath and it becomes sideways, then they eventually get it completely upside down next to the glass. Problem is, its so heavy they can't get out from under it and they suffocate. I found 3 weaners dead under it twice before I realized it was a bad bowl. So now I don't use it except for my lone adult male rat.

The bowl was a hand-me down I got in a free cage. I do have a larger version of the bowl for my dog, which is great because she's a "bowl scooter" when she eats. The rubber on the bottom stops that. ;)
 
Dopey me. As she has 3 babies under there, I left it in the cage until I could find something else. Sure as heck, she was stuck in it again this morning! As soon as I got her out she grabbed one of the babies in her mouth and got in the wheel. Must have thought I was taking her kids. I cut the hole bigger and they'll be getting a new house today :cheers:
