Hey, so Pumpkin is now 92 grams and i was feeding her an adult mouse(according to munson plan). It was 20 grams but i cut off the butt end to make it 16 just in case. However, she has gotten to the final bit of the mouse and has been stuck there for 15 minutes. She is struggling. This final part is really thick and one leg is stuck by the side of her mouth. I normally cut off the legs and tail so she doesnt have to worry about that but i missed this one. She cannot seem to get it down and im worried. Should I attempt to cut the leg while shes eating it or any of the big part of the mouse she cannot swallow? What should I do? I am so worried she will regurge as she has never done it before. AHH im so scared!!

I guess I'd see if you can get the mouse unstuck. It won't hurt her to spit it out at this point- the danger of regurge happens after it reaches the stomach.

I broke off the leg and she actually got it all down instead of spitting it out. She is covered in blood and guts now though since she was tossing and turning with the cut mouse so much. And I think she may have just started her blue period. But shes safely in the tank now. I just gotta pray she doesnt regurge and in two days i can clean her off. Ugh im worried about her now

It's ok to rinse off any blood and guts on the way back to her viv- just run her under cool water. Now that you've put her back, though, I'd just leave her alone. If you feed a partial mouse again, you might want to hand it to her so she starts with the narrowest part first- like the head- instead of letting her pick which end to swallow. When I've fed mouse parts in the past, snakes have had trouble getting started if they bite the cut section first.

ok, ill do that next time! Hopefully I can just feed her the whole thing next time around. Thanks for your help nancy!

The Munson Plan is aggressive. I feed a step below what it calls for. El Wray is 95 grams, and he is still on hoppers. Looking at Calli's records, she went to weanlings at 160 grams and adults at 190 grams. Jasmine went on weanlings at 140 and adults at 185. (Just her last feeding, to be exact!) Ruby went on weanlings at 145 and adults at 195.

If you ever look at the prey, and it just seems too big, going by the rule of the diameter of the prey should be one to one and a half times the diameter of the snake at the snake's widest part, just switch to a smaller-sized prey. It never hurts to be conservative, while feeding aggressively may cause a regurge. When changing to the next size up, I will sort through the bag of mice to find the smallest possible example of that size, and will for sure cut several slits in the mouse's back, and often along the sides for the first one or two meals after the size increase.

PS- I think you're reading the Munson Plan wrong. I see a snake weighing 91-170g should be on weaned mice, not adults.

I tried the munson plan for a bit and just found it was waaay too aggressive. What works better is just kind of using general ideas. Every snake is different some are more stocky built (meaning they can swallow something much bigger because they're thicker in general) and some are long and thin. It's all about your snake. If you're confused as to what size you should be feeding you could ask your local reptile shop owner or breeder. Even a vet could probably tell you (but they'd charge a fee).

Hey Nanci, I only have one snake so I just buy my mice at petco and the only sizes my petco carries are pinkies, fuzzies and adults. The fuzzys are 5 grams and the adults are 19. My old petco carried hoppers and I moved down to fort myers about a month ago and have been feeding two fuzzies until she hit 90 grams so i moved her up to half an adult at around 15 grams. Do you think I should feed two fuzzies again or keep with the half adults? thanks

oh and thanks ceduke! I am too!

Ladypunk- thanks! Yea I might actually start ordering weaned mice and adults online. I wish you could buy a smaller amount at a time though

I'd stick with two fuzzies. Can you get up to the show in Tampa in a couple weeks? You could buy a selection of different sized mice there.

I should be able to go actually. My hotel is right across from the fairgrounds cause Im going to the blink 182 concert on that night. So i got really lucky haha

Yeah, if you go to canadianmouseman.com they ship throughout the world I think... and you can order as many or as few as you like.... he has GREAT products and is really consistent on food.

The person I would look for, if he's there, is Lindsey Pike, Urotopia. He always sells mice for a friend, but the freezer with the mice is at Lindsey's uromastyx booth. Bring a cooler, newspaper, and a ton of ice. If you can go Saturday, there's less chance of the mice being sold out.

Ok Ill check that out. Yea, theres no way I can get there saturday. Is there a good chance they will be sold out? Its a $9 cover charge so if I cant get mice, that would suck. But ill still check it out
