I may need snake rehab.
Our first clutch has been hatching for a few days. The parents are both bloodred het charcoal, and so far all the hatchlings have been nice bloodreds. Today the 12th egg hatched out and when I first saw it I was taken aback at how the snake looks. It has a diffused head and belly but the pattern and color looks like a mix between an miami and an okeetee, he is absolutely beautiful... I thought, now how did that happen?
Then I picked him up and he is badly kinked, his tail is extremely curly-cued and I can't even straighten it. He has a bad kink right above his cloaca and I don't know if he could digest properly. Next he has a slit on his belly about a 1/2 an inch long, his intestines aren't sticking out, but there is a white piece hanging out, almost like he came out of the egg too early.
Other than his obvious defects, he is alert and weighs the same as his siblings, 6 grams.
I guess my main questions are as follows:

1. Will the kinks keep him from digesting correctly. I have one kinked snake, but its only his tail and I haven't seen one this badly kinked.
2. Why is his belly slit open, should I clean it even though I don't see any blood?
3. Do you think his color is just another one of his defects, have you even seen a bloodred look like this?
4. Do you think I should give this little guy a chance or put him in the fridge
On to the pics, thanks in advance.

Yeah, I've got 3 kinks right now. Two of them don't look like they'll interfere with life too much, the 3rd... I'm not so sure. Maybe give him a chance to eat and see where it goes?

I will answer question #4. I would euthanize it.

I concur. The open umbilicus alone is reason enough. At that size, the chance of infection is tremendous and a small hatchling, already compromised, just won't be able to fight it off, and death by septicemia is very painful.

Unfortunatly, I agree with the others. If it was just the tail I would say give it a shot but the other kinks are bad enough that I don't think that it would be able to digest food and the open belly, it would be a matter of a very short time that it would get infected and that is a very painful way to go once you are septic. I am sorry that you have to go through that.

I'm got to go with Susan on this one. I hate it for the little fella but you can save the guy a lot of pain by doing the kind thing for him.

If he just had a minor kink, it might be worth a try, but the open umbilicus is just not good.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

sorry for the tough decision but it is the best thing to do for the animal. I have been there done that.

Thanks for the advice guys, he is such a sweetie, but such is life. I'm going to wait till my husband gets home, I don't want him to suffer. Any ideas on what's gonna on with that color, just another of his abnormalities?

Yeah I'd let the poor fella go on also. That tail is crazy. I just had to put one down myself this year. It had a 90 degree turn at the tail and I knew he wouldn't make it. Plus it was soooo tiny. As for the open slit in the belly, I had one last year that had that and within 2-3 days it dried up and fused together and she's doing fine now. I just kept it dry and clean. But your lil guy looks like he's in pretty bad shape. Sorry for that.

hey , if you still have him we could take him in , what you said was a slit, it is where the egg is attached ,like an umbilical on a baby , please pm me , many thanks

Bear in mind that the OP is in the States - most folks here are, as it's a US-based board (although there are some of us Brits about!).

Yep - my point being that it would cost the breeder hundreds (possibly thousands) of dollars to ship you the poor l'il fella from America to the UK.

Looking at the photos, I think it was for the best. You're kind to offer though - hope the rescue works out with UK-based Corns.

have you seen my websites
I have indeed. I think you're very brave to take on rescues with less than two years experience of Corns.

Also in this saturated market, it's quite a step to be taking on not only potentially unhealthy Corns, but eggs as well. At the moment, rehoming both adults and hatchlings is going to be quite a task and you could quite quickly find that you have more coming in than going out. Have you checked out the Proteus Reptile Trust rescue and rehoming website? Might give you some ideas on further development of your own service and website.

Good luck!
