Please help out, it's an easy poll...

If this poll is to get some ideas for starting a site or revamping a site already in existance, that thumbnail question is a whole new poll... I have been doing a LOT of research looking for my next snake and listed in order are the things that bugged me about some of the reptile sites I was visiting. 1) Whole lists of abreviated morphs with no pics, or links that open a tab that says "No picture available". (So frustrating for a newb.) 2) A picture of the same snake for every one in the clutch. (why not just list it as a clutch and how many are available instead of listing every one with the same pic?) 3) No thumbnail. Since I'm still new to the descriptions I end up opening all the links and most are ones I'm not interested in. (It's so much easier to scroll down to the ones that I'm looking for, or catches my eye. Otherwise the ADD may kick in and I'll just move on to another site.) 4) Showing the thumb, but no large view for sold out snakes. (Just because they may be sold out doesn't mean I don't want to see what to put a request in for the next hatching or just remove it from the list if it won't be available again...) Just a newbs view, hope it helps....

New window or using the back button doesn't make much difference to me. Being a creature of habit, I don't lose my place because I forced myself to learn the habit of checking to see if the back button is enabled before closing a "new" window, and I tend to right-click->new window when I'm looking at pics. ;) But new window is still a little better IMO because it's quicker for the window to close than it is for the previous page to reload.

As an alternative idea, if I'm going to a photo gallery or somewhere to look at a bunch of pics, I'd rather have all the pics on one page. I'm there to see a bunch of them, not one or two, so show me all of them or a lot of them at a time. Or at least give me that option if I'm willing to wait for the load time. :) If it's a picture-heavy page and will take a while to load, I'll do something else while it's loading. But, if it takes that much time to load, and the load time is split up into 100 different clicks, then I have to spend all that time waiting for each picture. Then it's all click, wait, click, wait, click, wait, and I don't get through more than a few pics before I lose interest. If that makes any sense... but it would be like trying to watch a movie with a 10 second commercial break once every 50 seconds. At least when there's a long break I can go do something else in the meantime. :santa:

Actually, I don't like sites that pop images up in a new window. I like to do that myself. I've gotten so used to right-clicking on links and choosing 'Open in a New Window', that it's a little annoying to see it done for me. (Plus most of the time those windows have functionality disabled...)

Thanks for your input! I'm not sure I understand.... Do you mean that you would rather not click on a link at all, regardless of whether it opens in a new window or not? Perhaps it would help to give you a preview via thumbnail to decide whether you want to bother clicking or not? I've been really considering using thumbnails for that very reason.
It really is the same amount of "clicking" for the new/same window dilemma. You either click on the link and click on close, or click on the link and click on back. :shrugs:

I think what i meant was that i prefer not having to click a link at all. I like it when I view a thread and all the pictures are there for me automatically. If i had to click a link or thumbnail to view it, then that is two extra clicks for every picture i want to view on this site. It doesnt sound like alot, but for someone who uses this site alot ( i know most of us do :)) it can get to be alot and even a little bit of a nuisance. Thats what i was goin for :)

The problem us anitquated dial up users have is that pictures take so long to load. If we open them on the same page, we're stuck waiting and can't do anything else. If we open them in a separate window, we can continue to browse while waiting for the picture to load. A HUGE time saver at an age where time is at a premium for most of us :) .

Well this is a very good point that i am completely sympathetic to, having had dialup for a time in my life. And I know for many people there really just isnt another option, so I see where you are coming from.

I can think of two tips for dialup users that are having difficulty viewing the photo gallery threads. The easiest one is that when you see a photo gallery thread that you want to see, right click on the link and click open in new window. This will allow the pictures to load in one window, while you go off and read another thread. Do this to four or five picture threads and then go read a nice long thread in another forum while they load.

My second suggestion, which isnt all that great i'll admit, is that in web browsers there is an option to keep all images from automatically loading. you then get all text and are able to click on only the images you want to load and tell them to load. A little lame cause then you are forced to view almost a text only internet, but hey, interesting none the less right :)

Hope this helped someone, typing this much with one hand a week after surgery in my left arm is difficult
