What I find interresting is when a post is relatively clear, has good structure, and most of the grammar and spelling is correct, I don't notice the little mistakes the first time around. I can be a real pain in the butt when it comes to correcting others for their spelling - I think it has something to do with being obsessive compulsive :rolleyes: Reading a screen, rather than a hard copy can be challenging for me, and often I miss the little mistakes. What confuses the heck out of me is when an entire post is written in chat speek, with extra letters thrown in, and no punctuation.
Just my 2 cents on the whole topic.
 
:grin01: What I find interesting is that you misspelled "interresting". It happens to the best of us. Little typos aren't really the issue anyway. Its the completely senseless jumble of letters that throws me!
 
Ok, what is this chat speak thing? Have none of you hear of MSN messenger? Everyone uses it I thought! Wow, guess not! I love MSN, it is a very convenient way to get a hold of your friends when your entire campus is connected to the internet. Good points on the spelling and punctuation though!

You know, I have friends on MSN IMs, Yahoo IMs, and AIM. Not one of them uses chatspeak. The only use I can think of for 'chatspeak' is texting someone's cellphone, where character limits matter. Otherwise, it's just sloppy and unwieldy.

well i use chat speak all the time on aim, and even on the our chat network at my job, and i think it is totally fine because you are involved in a informal conversation with a friend.

However, I think the point is that this forum, or most forums for that matter, is not really the right place for chatspeak or bad grammar and punctuation. The purpose of cornsnakes.com is to be used as an information tool, and when people cannot understand what you are trying to say because what you have written is practically unreadable, it totally defeats the effectiveness of your message and is a nuisance to other members of the site.

That being said I also have a bit of a pet peeve with thread subjects that are simply one or two words and that really give you no clue of what that thread is all about. Not really talking about clever short titles but more of the ones like "do..." or "HELP!!". People on this site are very good about reading threads and questions, and you have a better chance of getting a helpful response if you are in need of help if you make you subject as informative as possible.

I was just thinking about this today when I saw a thread titled "How". I still don't know what's in that thread. The title's utter lack of descriptiveness does not motivate me to open the thread. I don't like "one more question", or its ilk either. If a poster refuses to do a search, can't they at least start a thread with a specific title? How hard is it to type "Regurge Question", or "Temps Question" for a thread title instead of "Me again!!111!", or the like? :shrugs:

Edited for correction: The thread I saw was titled "Has", not "How" as I posted above. And I actually did open it. It was about brumation. Isn't that clear from the title? ;) Danvega addressed the title issue in the thread.
 
i do see where you'll all coming from, but if you want to get technical, almost every single thing i have read in this thread so far (only a couple of pages) have got mistakes of somesorts.
i do know what you mean though, it can get on your nerves.
 
There's a very big difference between people making some spelling or gramatical errors and someone making 500 of them in a single post.

Many, many posts on here are almost impossible to read--and to be honest, if it's going to take me 10 minutes to figure out what you're saying I'm not going to waste my time.
 
illiterate people shouldn't be able to use public forums, in my opinion.

i do understand though, that some people just aren't strong spellers and/or readers.
 
to be fair i dont blame you, i was just pointing out something.
dont matter to me, Brits and US spell same words differently anyway lol.

exactly. I am not immune to spelling mistakes and grammar errors, but I make sure at least that my posts are legible and I at least try to not make such errors.
 
The difference (which has been repeated a bunch of times already, LOL) is between what is readable and what is "not readable." Nobody is freaking out over the occasional bad spelling or typo, or saying "I cannot understand what 'burmate' means." (Although I still giggle every time I see that one.)

To steal someone else's analogy, if you spoke pig latin through a kazoo I could probably eventually figure out what you are saying. But I won't care to, and you will be wasting your breath. If it's not important enough to present it in a way that people can make sense of it, then it is definitely not important enough for anyone to listen to.

For example:

Should I burmate my corns? If so, how should I do it? My friend said you have to if you are going to breed them.

Yeah, I learned some new vocabulary this week:

Shouldidnt - Something that you shud not of did, but you done it anyway.

Similar to:
auto-da-fe - What you oughn't to do but you do anyway.
