Just Another Corn Breeder
Hey all, I was wondering if any of you could help me out with a little review of my new website. I've been working on it for a while now, and I think it's coming along, but I would like anyone's input who'd like to give it to me. I know there are some things that aren't there or quite ready, but let me know what you think with what's up.

Questions:

[1] What do you like?
[2] What don't you like?
[3] What "must have" stuff is it missing?
[4] What "wish list" stuff is it missing?
[5] Are you a buyer or a seller?
[6] If you're a buyer, what advice would you give about what would make you more likely to buy from me?
[7] If you're a seller, what advice would you give about what would make people more likely to buy from me?
[8] Any other thoughts?
[9] Etc...

http://www.arizonareptile.com/v2dev/ (will be http://www.arizonareptile.com/ when ready)

All these snakes are for sale right now as well for those who are looking :)

Thanks!

It's quite clearly laid out. I like that you can jump to the year/age you're interested in. Your photos are nice and look professional. I would definitely recommend having either a 'welcome' page or, even better, an 'about us' page (or both). As a buyer, I'm always interested in the person's history and personality as well as the quality of their snakes. The prices and availability page were concise which is good. Going along with an about me page, I'd love to see a page that showcases your breeders and/or pets. Overall it looks good.

Right now you have generic individual photos. Will you have actual photos of each animal in the future?

The photos of the available snakes are very nice. The photos of the lavenders, bloodreds and butters mostly have a yellow cast. I feel like I'm not seeing the snakes' true colors.

In the section Our Breeders, you state their babies will be hatching in 2010. That should be updated.

Typos from care sheet:

injur in Feeding, expansive and will instead of with in Housing.

Is a new keeper going to know what heat tape is? I would add or substitute Under Tank Heater or Heat Mat.

In Why Buy, I don't think I'd recommend a heat rock.

Aggressive is spelled wrong.

The phrase "more naturally less-friendly" is awkward.

Perfect Size: should be "than say" not "then say."

I like the price list. Would it be too hard to link the listed animal to the page of photos of that morph?

Thanks for your suggestions!

@hypnoctopus - I definitely need an about us page. The welcome page is good, but I thought I'd just get you to what you want faster. I'll give it more thought. I have a breeders page on my old site, but my plan for the new one is to show the parents above the babies if I have photos of them.

@Pugsley - I read your other suggestions and they are good, but some should be considered for their pros and cons. For example, I'm not sure I want to take peoples' money right away, I think for a live animal purchase it's good to communicate first. That slows things down for some for sure, but I think it avoids more problems. Some people like it one way and others another. I haven't quite decided yet.

@Nanci - My plan was to show actual photos where I had them and generic otherwise. I definitely won't be posing, taking, cropping, uploading and linking photos for all animals as that will take forever. For higher valued ones I think that's doable. As far as picture quality... I'm probably not a good enough photographer and/or have a good enough camera to get it right. I usually use a flash because they turn out better, but then sometimes it messes with things. That's another reason the generic photos can be good, is because I can ensure they're better quality.

WHOA, I just saw your other comments.

I'll fix a few of those things. Unfortunately, you veered off course a little and are on my old site :)

There are a lot of pros and cons to these decisions, so thanks for your input. I'd like to make a really great site, but I certainly don't know everything about what people want.

A few more thoughts. For me at least, if a website doesn't indicate what types of payments they except, I'm probably moving on. I don't want to waste my time contacting someone I don't know, just to find out they only want to be paid in a way I can't or won't pay. So say up front your prefered method and optional methods of payment. Doesn't mean you have to open a store.

Even if you don't want to list a street address, at least give your city and state. The about us section.

The new site does have a better layout. You might want to use a black font against that orange background; the white font can be difficult to read.

The old site is confusing - I could never quite figure out what you had for sale and what was sold out. One of the reasons I never ordered from you. Also that stupid form to contact you. Please, just have your e-mail address there.

@Nanci - I'll look into those things you mentioned, thanks.

@Pugsley - Thanks for your input. I'll add the payment types accepted somewhere. The city/state will be there for sure, but probably not the actual address (I'm no pet store afterall). I'm still working with some fonts, etc. The old version of the site showed availability as correctly as it could with manual edits to the site. The new version is all database driven, so all I have to do is change one thing and it's reflected throughout the site. So that should be better for everyone. About the form & email address - no can do. Putting that out there just opens you up to a boatload of spam for the life of the email account. It's pretty standard to have the form there and it's actually easier for the visitor as well. It would also be nice to have an option to send a copy to the sender, but then spam bots use your server to send spam to the world. I think the way it is is best for everyone.

Thanks guys. Anyone else care to take a peek?

While I'm not an experienced snake buyer per-say, I do know what I want from a site like this (I used to help my mother breed specially bred fish ETC) Anyways, I was thinking that its important to add the terms of sale (as someone else said). Such as: animals guaranteed live or no refunds.

Also, I think shipping info would be nice.

DONE Spelling, typos, other suggestions for wording
DONE Link the listed animal to the page of photos of that morph (price list)
DONE White text on orange background
DONE Terms page
DONE About us page
DONE Shipping info
DONE City/state listed
DONE Pretty much everything else mentioned (or some things may be in the works still).

I've also added some more features to the site, such as the trait pages. I will also add some articles later.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, they are helpful.

It's not too late for others to weigh in :)
