I vote for aspen as well...
And I wouldn't use pine if you paid me...
Yes CEDAR is very dangerous...but the resins and oils in pine can be as dangerous...they can cause respiratory problems, as well as nervous system damage and death.
Aspen is clean...clumps when soiled...is aesthetically pleasing...had no odor.
It is by far the best...why risk using pine when you can use aspen for close to the same price?

This is another urban legend, can you back these words up with scientific tests done on snakes or any other reptile for that matter. I've used pine for over 20 years without a single death or illness because of it. One of the few times I've had a snake get a respiratory infection was during a short lived experiment with Aspen. The best substrate for the health of snakes is news print imho.

heres the ticket
ive got a tank i built 40 inches square by 17 inches tall. Mr. Lee ( 16 month old snow corn ) my kids favorite doo-dad loves the aspen chips burrows very easily and black maui calcium sand to feed on . a 1ft water trench splits the two sides to give the mice a obstacle.will be posting pics with in the next two weeks . gotta get a digi-cam from a friend .

Well, I used to house my snakes on aspen/ or kiln dried white pine, since kiln drying removes the danger of oil and resins. I never had any problems, but I found that I personally prefer shredded brown paper grocery bags. With newspaper I'm concerned about the newsprint being on my babies, and brown bag paper is aesthetically pleasing. Plus they tend to like burrowing in it, and a couple of them love piling it all in one corner and redecorating the place.
BTW, if anybody is looking for really really inexpensive shavings, feed stores have them. Locally I can get a 2'x1'x3' bale of "white shavings" (aspen, kiln dried white pine, or a mix of the two) for $8. It's just as good as what's at the pet store, shrink wrapped in plastic even. I use that for my chinchillas.

I just got a bale of aspen of that size for $7.99 at PETCO of all places...
Only one PetCo in the Chicagoland area that has good employees and a better selection than all the others...it even has a unique setup (every other of the 14 I've been to are setup exactly the same)...
Otherwise, feed stores are a GREAT place to go...just check the quality...I have noticed that some of the BIG bales are much bigger shreds than the small packages...almost more like chips...the one I found is all small shreds.

What about the option to choose more than one answer 
? I use aspen as a base substrate, and then "sprinkle" cocnut bark chunks on top. I like the look a "mixed" substrate provides, with the combination of the dark brown coconut and the light aspen, as well as the humidity effects of coconut bark. However, using coconut bark alone, I think, would hold TOO much humidity, at least at my house...
