Of course if you didn't live in CA I'd invite to the IL Wheaton show so that you and Emily could torture my hatchlings with lots of popping practice.:spinner:

All kidding aside, practice is the only way to get better at popping and knowing what you are looking at. If you have an amel or similarly "clear" snake you can check your popping result with candling. I always tell people the only sure way of knowing you have a female is when she lays eggs!

But the dots don't guarantee a female, you've got to remember. What if you're trying to pop a male and you don't do it right, so the hemipenes don't pop? You'll see the start of the hemipenes... which will look like dots. Dots aren't a confirmation of a female snake, they're more like, this is what happens when you don't get hemipenes. Before I could pop my male properly, he would just pop like a female... until I got some practice.
From what I have heard, the females specifically have the two red dots and males do not. I do not know too much about popping, but I have seen enough videos and pictures to tell that they are not hemipenes. So, do males have these red dots? Or is what I am looking at female specific?
The obvious males won't have those "dots" because the hemipenes will be everted. A male that is not popped correctly will show two red dots... because the hemipenes are red. Females have some glands there that sometimes show up red, sometimes not.
On light colored hatchling snakes, you can also candle (back light) them to see the hemipenes or lack there of.
Ok, thanks for the info, I have one more question. Sorry if it seems like i am being stubborn, but I really want to understand this.
I made a pain picture ^.^
If the hemi-penes come from under the slit like this...
would the dots be in a wierd place to be the hemi-penes because they are not comming from under the slit, but are in the middle of the opening?
Thanks =D
