popping hatchlings

I suppose this could go under breeding or this section but I'll put it here!

At what point do you all pop your hatchlings? I know a BIIIIIG breeder who probes hatchlings right out of the egg but I'm not confident probing anything under 4-5 months or so, so I'm just popping.

I was thinking of letting them have their post hatch shed, popping them then and then offering first feed after that.

Do you think being popped would distress the hatchling too much to focus on eating immediately and it would be better to let them have a day to chill out between being popped and being fed?

I want to get them onto their first feeds as soon as possible but I think it'd be easier on the hatchling to be popped on an empty stomach rather than popping 2 days after a feed...also cuts down the chance of getting crapped on!!!

Well, you have 6 weeks to answer, no hatchlings til then!!!!

What I did last year, and what I was planning on doing this year, was feeding them and then about 5 days later, a day or two before their 2nd feeding, I do the popping.

I'd rather make sure they have a meal in them before I start messing with them. I actually don't touch them, unless I have to, from the time I move them from the incubator until I pop them. I want them to have a while to get used to the world a bit before messing with them.

I usually do it when I need to know. I have found that the closer to hatching that you do it, the easier it is. When they first emerge, they don't seem to resist much, making it easier on them and me.

It is a method of everting the males hemipenes to tell what thier sex is. In other words, you pop out thier snakehood. ;)

I have popped right out of the egg, and then I check again before I sell them.

Last year I was able to pop them in front of the buyers as they came for pick up. This way I was able to prove to them what the snake was in their presence.

You know Clint... that's a good point. I may do that instead this year. Besides they would still have a week or so to get over any stress it might have caused before they would be offered any food.

I think I might pop asap too, Clint. I was then going to put them into same sex trios or fours on paper towel until their first shed and shen feed them once they shed. Then I'll (hopefully) sell most of them after 2-3 feeds.
