President Ford's Funeral

snakemom1961

Spring is here!
Am watching it now, is very emotional for me. I was very young when he was president, but I know my parents truly respected him through out his short term, partly because when my mom was a local Junior League president she had gotten Mr Ford to speak before her group. I lost my mom Nov 10, one day after her 83 birthday, and I know one of the highlights in her life besides marrying my dad and having her children(perfect if you ask her...LMAO) was being able to meet Representative Ford.....He will always hold a specail place in my heart and in my family's hearts......GOD SPEED MR PRESIDENT!

I just turned on the TV and now I have to decide which channel to watch it on, 2, 4, 6, 14, 15, 32, 50, 57, or 70.

I think everyone in a high place is there.

R.I.P Mr. Ford.

I wish they would have broadcast it in the afternoon when more people could see it.

Nanci

I agree Nanci, I happen to be able to witness it because I work 3rd shift and should be asleep by now but wouldn't miss this for anything...I don't care what anyone says but I truly believe he was one of the most Honest presidents we can call a server of our country!

I don't remember Mrs. Ford being so tiny.... I simply can't imagine losing the man you have loved for 58+ years. That's more than a lifetime for some people. The hole in that woman's heart must be enormous :(

What a Moving ceremony. Too many tears for me on this day. I lost my own mother who thought he was one of the best presidents ever had little more then a month ago, so that may have played a part in my weepiness today. No matter the reason I truly feel that man did more for the country in the 2 1/2 yrs he was in office then most do in 4 or 8 years!

Ase as been said.........It's the midwest decency .. May have been his downfall, but in the end is what he will be remembered for, in history

Yes that was a very nice service. Now they are going up to Michigan for another one. Can't believe they would want to go to that state. Sorry snakemom. :grin01:

R.I.P Mr. Ford

Ummmmmmmmm......what is wrong with this state? Yes I do take offense to a statement like that, especially at a time like this. I will probably try to go the the funeral tomorrow, since it is only 30 miles from me. This state like many others and many more then it aren't perfect in either financial stability or future revenue, but a state where you can raise your children to be honest, law abiding, good people? THAT is what I will always take from where I live and will probably die

LOL!!! Nothing is wrong with your state. I am just kidding because of your signature. I actually have a few friends that live in Michigan. But when you have lived in Ohio all your life you start calling it the State up North and mess with ppl you know who live there. Ya its all fun and games until of course we play Michigan. :grin01:

Yeah, what's wrong with a nice union state where people actually get annual cost of living raises? Oh, yeah- the South has never heard of that.

Or were you referring to the snow?

(Did you see President Reagan's funeral, talk about a tear jerker...)

Well I lived in Ohio so I know all about snow. I bet you dont see much of that in Florida.

Thats kinda why we moved to NC to get away from the cold, snow, and Michigan. :grin01: Im going to apologize for that one now.

We get a cost of living increase?
OMG. I gotta get with my boss!
Fords funeral was much more a tearjerker to me then Reagans

Ya know, I am one of the biggest Smartasses here in Michigan, but at a time like this I just don't see the time for such a comment..Sorry , but not now

You yourself may not be a union member, but unions affect everyone in a union state- we all benefit by them fighting for their members rights/benefits. For example- I lived in Minnesota my whole life until escaping to Florida nearly ten years ago. I worked in Minneapolis for ten years as an x-ray tech, for a large county hospital, where is was not legal for x-ray techs to form a union. However, the techs at private hospitals all thought they needed a tech union, and they organized, and went on strike, and were eventually recognized and given a big raise and increased benefits. My non-union hospital felt compelled to match that raise/benefits increase rather than risk losing employees to the union hospitals. They took the risks, went on strike- I benefited.

I was born when Eisenhower was President, but the first "POTUS" I remember was Kennedy; and the only reason I remember him was that I threw a tantrum that the Mickey Mouse Club wasn't on in late November of 1963, and why was my Mom almost crying while she was watching what was on television?

Fast forward to August 25, 1975; I was about to enter my junior year in high school, and there was a new Superintendent of the Milwaukee Public Schools, Lee McMurrin. President Ford was holding a "forum on domestic and economic policy" at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, and McMurrin had received a block of complimentary tickets to the event. Instead of doling them out to whatever cronies he had at the MPS Administration Office, he decided to give a ticket to the student government/student council presidents at each of the 18 or so respective high schools in the Milwaukee Public Schools.

I was fortunate enough to be one of those students, and was granted the "opportunity" to meet President Ford; that is to say, I got to shake his hand as he was "pressing the flesh" at the end of the forum; he actually made a point to graciously approach all of the students there.

Also in attendance were some members of his Cabinet; the two I remember the most were Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, who was a notorius buffoon (that afternoon, he separated a loaf of grocery store sliced bread into "stacks" as a visual "bar chart" of the USDA budget), and Transportation Secretary William Coleman Jr., who at the time, was only the second black man to serve in a Cabinet position.

It was a heady, cool environment for a 16 year old kid. I have some old, faded, grainy pictures taken with a Kodak "Instamatic" somewhere that I'll try to dig up, scan, and post to this thread.

I'm in agreement that Ford did more in his short tenure than most elected Presidents do/did in theirs. While I disagreed at the time, his pardon of Nixon's crimes (and Nixon was an embarrassment to the office) was, in retrospect, the right move. And unlike Reagan, he didn't search for the "photo op" once he left office.

IMHO, he was a decent man who cared more for the nation than his party's power or image. Would that we'd have politicians like him in this day.

Rest in peace, Mr. President. Your integrity is, and will be, missed.

regards,
jazz

Carter was president when I was born and the first president I remember being in office was Reagan.

It wasn't until school that I learned of Ford's presidency. I wish all presidents were like him.

I'm ashamed to say I've never been to the museum in Grand Rapids, though I only live an hour away. Some day. :)

Thank You Jazz, I have to be back at work in 5 hours, but right now am having a VERY hard time taking my eyes off the tv. President Ford just arrived "home" back in Grand Rapids. I'm still trying to decide if I will go tomorrow or no as it is only 30 miles away from where I live, and since my mom had the gracious opportunity to meet him when she was President of her local chapter of the DAR(or Junior League, as she was president of both at one time, and I can't remember which it was at the time) and introduce him as a speaker to her group when he was in the House, I almost feel an obligation to attend in her stead. She passed away last month and would be very moved by today's ceremonies

Snakemom, I think it would be very appropriate for you to attend, Mom's stead or not.
