Pretty Dung Beetle (I'm Photographing Poo!!)

This guy eluded me yesterday, but I got him "on film" today!!

I just got a dog about a year and a half ago. I have only owned dogs up north. I was mystified when I discovered a pile of dog poo produced in the morning would be a tiny pile of dirt when I got home. _Something_ (probably many things) were making it disappear!

Yesterday, I noticed a chunk of poop walking across the yard. I investigated, and found this!

I watched them at work for quite a while yesterday. The adult apparently moves the poop, or not, to a location that it likes. (I can't figure out the criteria) then digs a hole under the poop and does something. Probably lays eggs, then feeds poop to the larvae.

Wish our dung beatles around here would do dog poo. I have only seen them on cattle poo around here.

Love the Fatman

I probably do need a new boyfriend, but that unrelated point aside, I find beetles, caterpillars, and milli/centipedes oh so cute!

The idea of dung beetles is disgusting, but they do serve a useful purpose, and that one is a lovely shiny green color! Looks like high-end car paint.

What a gift at the end of the day/weekend. I laughed out loud more than once. Nanci, you could moonlight as a standup comic,...or writer for SNL or something.
