Pricey snakes at Petsmart.

Lennycorn

Just see the truth
I was checking on some prices of supplys and new to this store were the snakes!! They had a apricot pueban milksnake $99.99. I never heard of them. A pueblan milksnake $89.99 and a banded California Kingsnake $69.99. All hatchling. What was shocking was the setup. It was good!. They had them on reptile bark but the temps and all were fine. And they were in separate tanks with water hides and a little foliage too. I'll check in on them for time to time to see how it goes.

That's cheap :grin01:

But I'm glad to hear that they've got good tanks, I've heard awful things about big chain stores like PetCo and PetSmart, good to hear that they're not all bad. :)

Perhaps the higher prices will deter idiots from buying a cheap snake? Sounds like a good move for your local petsmart.

When I was in Texas last Summer, I went to petsmart and was shocked at their prices and setups. 10 baby corns all huddled together with crickets crawling all over them... le sigh.

I purchased my BP from a guy who sells to PetSmart. I paid $35 and they want $89.99. He told me that he sells them for $35.00 and that's their mark up. I suppose they need to recoup their feeding/maintenance somehow. From what I've seen, at least with the BP's, they don't stay at the store for long.

Yeah, if they get corn I can't wait to see the mark up. I'll be interested on how long they last in the store. The other mom and pop pet store sell only one or two corns a year with a huge mark up. Usually snow or amels, thats way I'm thinking to breed .....butters.

Petsmart has been a lot better recently. They've had a big push to revamp their husbandry. I actually heard an employee discouraging cohab a couple weeks ago when I was buying crickets. So good for them.

where i live-of the large chain stores-it is mainly petland that sells any snakes, which are crazely priced. for a teeny weeny amel it is over $200! for me, one snake i got at a local petstore where the guy who runs it actually knows stuff about reptiles and my other at a reptile show, i got both for less than the amel at petland. of which they had marked, an amel, opal, ghost and something each all for over 200 at the same price...and i don't even know if these were the correct morphs.

Here’s a horror story for you…the guy that I purchased my BP from said that a large pet store, in the city just south of me, buys up a large lot of BP’s just to let the majority of them die in the back room of their store. Apparently, only the ones that are on display get fed. I guess that if you’re not covered in fur, you don’t get the same considerations. SICK!

i recently went to the petsmart in lexington and they had a common corn for 105 dollars and it was a hatchling

HAH, I must have the best petsmart ever, price wise. They sell all corns for 39.99. They don't look at the phase and price accordingly. Got my RO, my blizzard, HAD a granite for that price (the granite got taken back, he wouldn't eat... and had a crimped spine...) BP's are 89.99 but are currently on "sale" for 50. When they have Cali Kings, they're 70.

They do do the whole 10 hatchlings in one cage w/ crickets crawling all over though....

Why is there such price variation between the individual stores? In franchises here, all of the prices are consistent. We only really have one major pet store franchise, otherwise, they're all what you call 'mom and pop' stores. We have Pets at Home, but they don't stock reptiles (at least not in my branch), cats or dogs. But everything else really.

my local PetCo has fluctuating prices. Like garters are usually 19.99-24.99 and their corns are 29.99-39.99 except for their candycanes which are 59.99 (and very tiny!) compaired to expo's and true herp shops they are pricy but the only ridiculous pricing I have seen lately is like mention 89.99 or a BP and they have a russian tortoise for 99.99

The fact that they don't even sell a lot of what is needed to properly care for a snake and that they have poor care sheets and rarely anyone all that versed in herpeticulture is the sad part. I'd spend more on the animal if I knew it was always well cared for and that the people were knowledgable about the actual animals they were selling. But I do have some other gripes. All the tanks for there herps are at the same temps. not to say 80 isn't a good avg temp for most herps just that its hard to dial anything in that way.
2: Their feeding schedules are not always that much better than a maintanance diet. And because their employees want to make sales and don't want to seem un-knowledgable they tend to tell the customer whatever they can to make the sale.

But this is all stuff we have all seen or will see at these kinds of stores. I am lucky that many of the employees at my local petco keep herps and don't generally go to far out of line when making a sale.

In our area, Petsmart selling snakes is a disaster. They are cohabbing KINGSNAKE hatchlings. Obviously they have no idea that there is a risk to cohabbing hatchlings, especially kings.... :bang:
