I hope you guys didn't whittle them in your youths. Getting struck by one would really hurt considering that they'd surely be petrified by now. :santa:

Seriously, though, thanks for the welcome. I've been all over this site the past few nights, and it's a pleasure to see all the knowledgeable posts. And the great senses of humor.

One question, though. How do people get those wonderful pictures? I've been trying to get good pictures of my snakes, and all I get are blurs or washed out colors or "the snake was there" pictures. :crazy02:

I just got my first digital camera about three months ago. My pictures are still not great, but I learned that with a combination of decent lighting, flash on, and macro mode, they will usually be clear. When I try to use auto-focus without flash or macro, I usually get blur unless the subject and I are perfectly still (which is almost never the case). The combo seems to increase the shutter speed.

My pics are more documentary than artistic. Unfortunately, most of them feature my arm.
 
Well, Susan's one of the expert photographers here. I think it's the tree she uses. :D Seriously, I know she's mentioned that it takes many tries to get those gorgeous pictures. Don't feel like you're alone on this one, because lots of us have those same problems you do. It helps to have a "helper." That way, one person can take the pictures while the other tries to control the snake. The helper can even hold the tail end to keep it still... then just crop that part out of the picture. Good luck. We'll be looking forward to pictures.
 
If I dragged out the old camera, tripod, black hood and flash bar, all my pics would be great :grin01: I take lots of pics with the digital and most are terrible. Every now and then I get a good one. :cheers:
 
Thanks for the input. I love my digital camera, but the darn snakes will not stay in that 'perfect pose' long enough for the delay!

Should I post my lousy attempts at shots here, or on the photo forum? I'm sort of embarrassed to post them with all the good photos, but I do want to get everyone's opinion on my new 'shoulderless' children.

As others have said, welcome to the forums and the addiction. I started out with one amel in August 04 at 45 (and for those of you prone to point out my dangling participles, that would be me, not the snake). I'm sure I'll be up to over a dozen corns by next spring.

As for photos, nothing helps more than a tripod, if the shot allows it. One trick I've read here is to put the snake in a Sterlite tub with a hidebox. Let the lil' one slither into the hide, set up your camera for the shot, and prefocus on the hide. Remove the hide just before you trip the shutter, and you should get a momentarily still snake with a "Wha' Happened?" look.

Marvelous! I'll try it! Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to post the pics I've got on the photo forum, but I'll be trying hard for better shots soon.
 
Well...glad to see I am not the only one (late bloomer). I am 51 and just got my first. Already desided to get her a boyfriend. She is an 05er, a month and a half old now. I can spend hours watching her at night. It's a good addiction!!!! Welcome!
 
My little 05 amel is the only one of my three to be out and about a lot at night. Still trying to figure out how to escape, I guess. The others mostly stay hidden, although I suspect they come out to play (and eat) once I go to bed.

you're right; it's great fun to watch. The little one seems absolutely fearless.
 
I'm new too

I'm new to the world of snakes but I've hade horses since I was 11. (will be 37 in Dec). I have a non characteristic app mare and an app gelding. Used to have AQHA horses but just the apps now.
 
Got my first horse at 40, and my first corn snakes at 55. Wonder what I'll get at 65?

At least corn snakes take up less space to breed (and keep!) than horses.

I'm already planning to get three more corns. I want a bloodred and a lavender (to try and bred myself a purple snake!), and I want a nice stripe.

Added to what I have, I should be able to breed some pretty hatchlings down the road.
