Q for Boa Enthusiasts/Keepers

I have had boas in the past but they were all pretty easily identified as common Colombians. I am about to pick this one up from friend of my little brothers, I believe the story goes "I brought it home without asking mom...etc."

My question is: Does this look like a regular ole' Colombian to any of you?
It seems rather dark compared to most that I have seen...not sure where the kid got him from, still waiting for my brother to call me back. It looks somewhat like a Nic to me...I was wondering if anyone else thought the same.

This is the only photo I can get for now, and any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Josh

I'd call it common unless you find out otherwise. It could potentially be a nic cross, I suppose...more pictures when you get a chance!! :D

Keep us updated when you get more info! :)

I am trying right now to get him to shoot me a few more emails before I say yes or no...thanks for your help, and hopefully I'll have some more to put up here soon...

At every pet store I've been to, I've seen boas like him listed as "red tail boa". Everyone besides pet stores seem to call them something else though.

I got an email back from him and he said "arrker Central American Boa" I'm assuming that "arrker" is some kind of typo as I can't find ANYTHING with that in it, nor have I ever heard of it....

But I guess Central American kind of narrows it down a bit...are those generally a bit darker than "Common Boas"?

I have no idea. I've held a number of these red tails and seen many, many pictures, and the dark/light part of their coloring can vary quite a bit. In person, all the really young ones I've seen/held are rather dull but light, while the older and bigger ones have more defined markings and are darker.

From what I've seen, yeah, Central Americans tend to be darker. I think Nics fall in the CA category, too, so you weren't far off at all... He's a cute little bugger. Don't forget to post pics when you get him! ;)

Shenzi, he's talking about the differences between BCI localities. I'm pretty sure you're talking about standard Colombian Boa Constrictors (the most common BCI locality), which are pretty commonly sold as "Red Tail Boas" at pet stores.

Yep, C.A. just tells me (which I could tell anyways just by looking at him) that he's a BCI and not another Boa species. It is also a pretty good indicator that he will not grow to be as large as a Colombian, most Central Americans will stay under 6 feet (especially males).

And maybe 'arrker' is the snakes' name?? :shrugs:

Edit: Taylor, Nics do fall in the C.A. category. :)

As Hallie stated, Central Americans fall into the same category as Nics. From the pic you have up it does look like a Nic. But a good pic of the belly, head and top of the body will really help in identification.

If you really wanted a dwarf boa you should have waited. My Nic girl is gravid and due to have babies soon. ;)

Shhh, you never say stuff like that until they are all delivered. Slugs, Stillborns... more taxing on the female....
Fingers crossed for tiny little boas! :)

I appreciate everybody's help...unfortunately (or fortunately) the guy came back as a total @$$ when I asked for ONE picture from the top (to see color/pattern) and acted like I was asking him to save the world. So I told him off :D
He got me on a bad day anyways, but honestly...if I'm going to buy a new snake, I damn well better get some good pictures of it first...or atleast of the parents...

Sooooo....I just PM'd Bekers....gotta love that woman!

Anyways, thanks again everyone :)
