Question about rat snakes..

Brizzle

Craziness
I was just wondering if rat snakes are as calm as corn snakes?
And are they about the same size as adults?

Depends which rat snake your talking about...

Texas rats get bigger and tend to be fiesty, especially when young or without handling.
Black rats also get bigger, but are less likely to bite, just more likely to musk.
I could keep going, but I'll wait for a more specific question.

Oh, and technically, Corn Snakes are also referred to as Red RAT Snakes.... :bang:

We have a couple of Rat Snakes in our collection, a Grey Rat Snake and a Leucistic Texas Rat Snake. Both are very docile as they get handled regularly. Our LTR is probably the most lazy and care free snake we have. The Grey tends to be very much more alert. If you were to approach her from the top she gets into a defensive pose, but never strikes or bites, whereas if you approach her from the side she is more apt to come to your hand to be held. She kind of seems to like being handled.

I've known more docile leucys then aggressive ones, most just take a little handling work. You can also try to find a little rarer and a little more expensive leucistic black rat.

I would have to put in a vote for a bairds rat; mine seem to be a little more high strung and jumpy compared to corns, but just as gentle.

I've got a Honduran ratsnake that is a little more nervous than corns, a baird's that is completely docile and a Russian ratsnake that is a big baby (the little Russian ratsnake is a bit more nervous, but still very sweet). The emoryi's are very gentle, too. I don't have any other ratsnakes to compare to, but would like to look into a few more species.
