Question about TUB housing!

Ok so I know there's a lot of discussion on this, but I need a couple of specific questions answered from you experts and professionals.
I want to switch to big plastic tubs. The glass aquariums are hard to handle and lift and it takes me a while without my boyfriend's help. They're heavy and hurt my back at times.
I have huge metal shelving to put the tubs on and I will make sure the boys have large, cozy and clean homes ( of course ).

My questions are this: If the heating pad gets too hot, say the thermostat stops working or something like that, at what point would it melt the plastic tub? I am extremely concerned about this aspect, as obviously I do not want my snakes harmed but I don't want to start a fire, either.

Next question: I am put off by leaving the lids off the tubs and sliding them into a rack where it sits flush with the roof of the rack it's in.... it makes me nervous, as both my boys are always pushing their luck, and my buttons, by trying to push the lids off. I want to keep the lids on the tubs for security. Is this unacceptable or dangerous in any way? Obviously I would have the proper air holes drilled in, but I want to make sure keeping the lids on is okay.

Any other advice you have on tub keeping that's not a full rack system I'd be more than glad to take! Pictures would be great also. I know how large the tub needs to be and I am going bigger than the suggested size for adults. I'm just trying to make cleaning their home easier on me but I want to be safe. Thank you guys!

I was wondering about this too.. I want to get a second corn but don't have room for a full glass tank.

I keep my lids on my tubs, it's a matter of preference really. As far as the heating element goes, it should be connected to a thermostat which should be connected to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) which automatically shuts the whole thing down if the heating element or thermostat malfunctions.
Hope that helps,
~Beau

Just some food for thought....

If you're contemplating the tub ideas themselves, ZipLoc/IRIS apparently now make a tub called the Weather Shield Box. It's a weather sealed tub with latching lid. I'm using the 44 quart as my tub for dubia roaches. I cut out 2 panels within the lid and then hot glued metal window screen for ventilation. It's been working great and these tub might be a solid option for using on a metal shelving unit over going with a rack. Walmart carries them if you want to do some physical exploratory research.
